I saw an interesting program on Kyknet (afrikaans channel on DSTV) today. A group of Afrikaners went to Angola to trace their roots. In 1875 a group of 4000 Boer started what is known as the Dorsland Trek - they travelled through Namibia and eventually settled in the highlands of Angola. There they dug canals, built up farms and built their homes and churches. It was an interesting and sad story to see how everything is now left in ruins - what once was a prosperous area is now impoverished - as you well know.

A UN survey in the early nineties revealed that top three countries concerning agricultutral potential in Africa are:
1) Ethiopia
2) Angola
3) Mozambique
All three destroyed by decades of bloody wars... it was said of Ethiopia (the bread basket od Africa) that they could produce enough maze to feed the whole of Africa
