~ 3 Different Angles of Tutankhamun’s Golden Mask ~

The Egyptian Museum of Antiquities in Cairo is the home of countless fascinating and unique items of antiquity. I visited this museum in the early 1990’s when I was living in the Middle East, the greatest lure for me was the prospect of seeing the contents of Pharoah Tutankhamun’s tomb. I was not disappointed; on the contrary, I remember my visit like it was yesterday.

A very large and spacious area had been designated for the artefacts from the chambers of Tutankhamun’s tomb. Within this area, at the end of the building, was a well guarded room containing the contents from The Boy King’s actual coffin. What a spectacle! I could hardly believe my eyes when I walked in and immediately saw his gold mask mounted in a glass cabinet in the centre of the room.

If seeing is believing, THAT was one defining and unforgettable moment in my life. I was immediately captivated by its’ pure beauty, magnificence and presence over all else around it. No photo can truly do it justice; it really has to be seen at close range as I did that day. Simply astounding!

The gold mask was extracted from the innermost mummy case. It weighs a staggering 11kg and is 54cm in height. It is made of pure gold, semi-precious stones and coloured glass. His collar includes inlaid turquoise, lapis lazuli, cornelian and amazonite.

I took three photos of Tutankhamun’s death mask from different angles at close range. I did this as I had never seen a photo of the sides of the mask, only the spectacular frontal aspect. This week’s Friday theme is a perfect opportunity for me to bring together these different perspectives of the gold mask and, just for good measure, I have also arranged in this composition one of my Nile sunset photos at Thebes. I think this poignant as it is here that Tutankamun’s tomb is located....in the Valley of the Kings.

PP workshop details:
1. Scanned negatives of all photos. (Taken back in 1990 – i.e. pre-digital era!) :-)
2. Crop, resize and adjust contrast of each and save individual images.
3. Layer and arrange on black BG.
4. Adjust size again and re-sharpen new image. Save and post.

Oh, wow, Martyn, I have always wanted to see this display! You have done it proud!
The details of the Tut masks are incredibly sharp and detailed for such small images. I love how the gold has caught the light to give it a very classy shine.

Have a great day,
Bev :-)
