Sailing on a felucca…

During my Egypt trip in 2004 I made, together with the people from the Shoestring travel group, a boot trip from Aswan in the south to Kom Ombo a site down stream the river Nile. The weather was gorgeous, but swimming in the Nile is not recommended due Bilharzia or Schistosomiasis so we were with a few people on this sailing boat. Food and drinks were enough on board, but no toilet (sorry ladies). Halfway we had a stop a small island, noting on it but donkeys and what they produce after lunch. So no nice restaurant, no hotel with bath nor toilet (again sorry ladies I know we can roll out the fire hose) so I can assure you I wasn’t the most pleasant smell around the boat the next morning. But what the heck, I’m still alive and one night on a felucca on the Nile is not business as usual its just fun (for one night). Regarding this photo, we were with two boats direction Kom Ombo. Just a nice view of the river Nile and remind that behind the small green strip the desolate desert is.

N.B. This photo is taken with a Minolta 300si camare and 200ASA Kodak chrome 36mm film. The film was not only developed but the pictures were also put on a CD by the AH-fotoservice.

Felucca
A felucca (Arabic: فلوكة) is a traditional wooden sailing boat used in protected waters of the Red Sea and eastern Mediterranean including Malta, and particularly along the Nile in Egypt. Its rig consists of one or two lateen sails.
They are usually able to board ten-some passengers and the crew consists of two or three people. Despite being made obsolete by motorboats and ferries, feluccas are still in active use as a means of transport in Nile-adjacent cities like Aswan or Luxor. They are especially popular among tourists who can enjoy their quieter and calmer mood than motorboats have to offer.

Nile
The Nile (Arabic: النيل‎, translit: an-nīl, Ancient Egyptian iteru) is a major north-flowing river in Africa, often regarded as the longest river on Earth, although some sources claim the Amazon in South America is longer.
The northern section of the river flows almost entirely through desert, from Sudan into Egypt, a country whose civilization has depended on the river since ancient times. Most of the population of Egypt and all of its cities, with the exception of those near the coast, lie along those parts of the Nile valley north of Aswan; and nearly all the cultural and historical sites of Ancient Egypt are found along the banks of the river. The Nile ends in a large delta that empties into the Mediterranean Sea. (Text Wikipedia.com)

Hans, super shot here. The felucca is sailing nice and smoothly on the Nile, but one night was enough for you then?
I love the look of the desolate island in the BG, lots of different palm trees growing there.Well composed, the colours are great, quite beautiful, TFS

Hello Hans,
A well framed Nile River scene. Effective placement of the felucca. Tech details are quite good for an older photo. Enjoyed reading your Note - very funny especially about the toilet. Cheers. Danilo

Hello Hans,
A gorgeous shot, romantic even, but after reading your note and checking the attached link I think I'll stay home!
A great composition--perfect placement of the boat, beautiful reflections, and I love how the sail fills the sky. Even though most of the sail is in its own shadow, the highlight on the top of the boat itself is perfect.
As always, your frame complements the shot.
Take care,
Karen

Beautiful, Hans, beautiful... and tranquil as well. An image to look at and relax... and dream of a visit to Egypt ;o)).
Nothing I'd alter here, it's perfect. (though I'm not too fond of large borders like this...).
Anyway, TFS.
