Nile Valley balloon trip…

During my journey trough Egypt I also made a trip with an hot air balloon over the Nile valley. An in-flight picture you can find here - I travelled from Cairo by train to Aswan, by bus to Abu Simbel, by felucca to Kom Omo, further by bus to Luxor….and so on via the Sinai desert back to Cairo and finally home sweet home the Netherlands –
Together with a bunch of screaming American tourists we soared of in the very early morning (take of at 6 AM). While descending and preparing for the landing (no ILS –instrument landing system, nor powered brakes) I kept looking over the edge of the basket and saw the shadow of ‘my’ balloon in the green fields of the valley. Seconds after this photo shots the basket hit the ground and….took of again. A free ride for all. (more screaming). Anyhow after the second ‘ride’ the captain finally ‘landed’ the soaring basket, one of the passengers asked the man in charge if it was a crash landing or if we were shot down? Nice assertive question isn’t it? And yes such a balloon has a real captain completely in uniform with lots of golden bands on his shoulder pats. In the WS you can find a picture were the crew an passengers celebrating the survival after the landing. One thing it’s not a real recommendation to take a balloon trip over the valley after a while the view is quite boring the only fun part is the landing!

Hot air balloon
A hot air ballooning ass consists of a bag called the envelope that is capable of containing hot air. Suspended beneath is the gondola or wicker basket (in certain, long distance or high altitude balloons, a capsule) which carries a source of heat capable of producing a sufficient temperature gradient between the air inside the envelope and the surrounding air mass to give enough lift to keep the balloon and its passengers aloft. Unlike gas balloons, the envelope does not have to be sealed at the bottom since the rising hot air only exerts pressure on the upper hemisphere of the balloon to provide lift. In today's sports balloons the envelope is generally made from nylon fabric and the mouth of the balloon (closest to the burner flame) is made from fire resistant material.
Recently, balloon envelopes have been made in fantastic shapes, such as hot dogs, rocket ships, and the shapes of commercial products. (text wikipedia.com)

Amazing scenery. Looks very desolate. Nice POV.
And you're in the balloon right? I sure hope so, unless you're following closely behind :-)
TFS.

wonderful shadow, great perspective and colors!very well done!

:)) Amazing - looking at your shadow and it keeps running away from you, not even connected to you. On the ground it's different - you try to run away, but the shadow follows, tied firmly to you :)
Nice view!
You didn't mention one thing - did you participate in the screaming? ;)
Regards, Evgenia

Heel gaaf Hans.
Schaduw springt er echt uit en in elke plek trekt wel de aandacht.
Leuk, je hebt echt een eigen stijl. Haal op de gallery zo jouw foto's eruit. (vooral door het frame) De Hans-style!!
Tot ziens Alex

Interesting observation,. feeling is very well rendered.

Hello Hans,
My first trip to Egypt. Thanks for taking us on the journey. This is incredible. Wonderful POV. I thought you were suppose to get wine and cheese on these rides--- drink enough and you can tune out all the screaming from those silly tourists :-) Julie

The colors here are fantastic. You had a terrific idea when taking the shadow of the balloon... Your framing is particularly interesting and it's amazing you were able to get such a clear shot :) Great blue skys and overall a very lovely composition...

LOL... I will be one of the screaming "tourist" too... hahahaha, never mind, bet you already had enough hearing the screaming, be glad you didn't have your ear drums broken. :P

Excellent photos, i like the shadow very much, not many people will take the photo of the shadow, most properly they will take the shots within the basket or some other scenery. very unique. :D Well captured, glad it was a "Safe landing" hehehe...Thanks for sharing my dear friend, what an expirence you got there. :D

Cheers,
Sweety

Heerlike fot Hans.. doet mij ook een beetje denken aan mijn vliegtuig schaduw over rotterdam! Great shot and POV ! Compli

Cheers!

Ben.

Schus Hans!
Great shot love the view and perspective!

Excellent compo and colours, those fields with brown and green squares and the baloon shadow are amazing. Very nice and unusual. Very nice frame.
TFS,

Andreea

Great scenery and I love the inclusion of the balloon shadow in the centre of the picture - gives the picture a real focal point without detracting from the scenery itself.
Thanks for sharing
Mark

Hoi Hans,

Wow, dit is echt een hele gave foto!
Ik vind die schaduw van die luchtballon erg goed vastgelegd.
En verder ziet het er uit als een hele mooie plek.
Mooie kleuren en een goed perspectief.
Topfoto :-)

Point of view appears to be the baloon itself, is it? Nicely captured details of crops on the light hued soil. Cultivation on the land along with shadow of the baloon are looking fanstastic. Well done my friend.

Thanks for sharing an aerial motif.

Hans,
Your quite the adventurist. Man, I'd give anything to have a view from a balloon like this. Sounds like you had some "scary fun"!
thanks for the great notes and the fantastic POV. The shadow is perfect!
Scott

Hi Hans.
You bring back vivid memories our balloon flight we had over south devon this year....a stunner.

Stv

Hi Hans,
I didn't know this was the kind of flying you did! Wow, I'd love to do this one day . . . how spectacular, a crash landing and everything!

Gorgeous colors, beautiful sky, and the various textures are set off by the light perfectly.
All the best,
Karen
