Green Barron’s final atonement?

Continuing showing places from my Egypt trip in June 2004. After a four day stay in Dahab at the Gulf of Aquaba I went by bus through the Sinai desert to the Saint Catherine's Monastery near Mount Sinai to believed the holy mount were Moses received the Ten Commandments. Maybe a good place for a sinner as I am ;) Together with my traveller fellahs we initially should stay at a hotel near the monastery but fortunately the hotel was overbooked so our guide knocked on the door of the monastery and asked for shelter….My first time to sleep in a real monastery who ever had that thought; Green Baron as monk! Ha! When a saw my ‘room’ it was quite sober as a monks room should be. But it was nicely clean and the mattress [mattress you dirty mind not maîtresse!] on the bed was OK, so it wasn’t really a torture to stay there for one night. Hence this is my last “atonement“ (OK David?) regarding TL-picture mishaps; two annoying twigs on the photo of last Friday) :)

Picture was taken from half away the mountain opposite of the monastery in the late afternoon while the last sunrays strikes the valley.

Saint Catherine's Monastery

Saint Catherine's Monastery on the Sinai Peninsula, at the mouth of an inaccessible gorge at the foot of Mount Sinai, in Egypt is one of the oldest continuously functioning Christian monasteries. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The monastery was built by order of Emperor Justinian I between 527 and 565, enclosing the Chapel of the Burning Bush ordered built by Helena, the mother of Constantine I, at the site where Moses is supposed to have seen the burning bush; the living bush on the grounds is purportedly the original. The site is sacred to three major world religions - Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

The monastery library preserves the second largest collection of early codices and manuscripts in the world, outnumbered only by the Vatican Library. Its strength lies in Greek, Coptic, Arabic, Armenian, Hebrew, and Syriac texts. The complex houses irreplaceable works of art: mosaics, Greek and Russian icons, encaustic paintings, as well as sacerdotal ornaments, chalices and reliquaries. Most importantly, it is home to some of the earliest icons in the world, dating to the 5th and 6th centuries. The oldest icon on the Old Testament theme is also preserved there. A project to catalogue the works held in the library is currently being undertaken. The monastery also comprises the entire Orthodox Church of Mount Sinai, an autonomous (as distinct from autocephalous) Orthodox Christian church headed by an archbishop, who is also the abbot of the monastery. The archbishop is traditionally consecrated by the Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem.(Text Wikipedia.com)

Hi Hans

A superb, high pov offering an expansive overview of this interesting Monastery. Perhaps I would sharpen slightly but many people prefer a softer image. Good lighting, contrast, & colour. Tfs!

Wow, what a stunning piece of architecture and a beautiful BG.

Hallo Hans.

Gr, Jacqueline

Hi Hans,
I'm amazed how they built this monastery in what appears to be an arid area. Well seen. Good colors and DOF in this composition. Greetings! Danilo

Hallo Hans,

Groet,
Anneke

what a POV! looks like a miniature;)
very well done Hans!
Thanks

Armel.

Hi Hans,

You certainly do some travelling don't you! (It has been said that they don't let me out of Liverpooll very often!)

This is yet another excellent capture. I especially like the light, creating sharp contrasts here.

Well done,

Nigel

Are you referring to my comment on the flower, dear Hans :) Hey, you know that I didn't mean to offend you and I take this only as a joke, right?

Hi Hans,
Great view on the monastery, atonement or not...
I like the way it looks almost like a toy, lost in a desertic mountain.
Mary

Beautiful capture. Very sharp and clear.
And the stay gave you a chance to repent your sins :-).
So you're still living there I presume.

Hi Hans,

So that's where Charlton Heston got the Ten Commandments! (^_^) Great POV with the natural sunlight making it look warm. Im sure there are many photo opportunities at the

Hi Hans,
Frieda.
