Maasai Mara Sunset
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Being within one degree of the Equator means that the day is almost exactly 12 hours long, every day - irrespective of season. It also means that the sun comes up and drops at an incredible rate.
We had just finished a game drive in the Mara when the sun started to peep out from behind the cloud that had obscured it for the past hour or so.
The bottom half of the frame looked just like a 'traditional' sunset, but the rays it sent beaming above the cloud and into the blue sky above make that scene look almost like a sunrise.
This was a really tricky one to meter for. I was using RAW and knew that I would retain greater detail and control than if using JPEG.
The camera was telling me to use 1/1250 at about f11 as there is so much intensity from the sun and cloud edges. However, that would have rendered everything else as a pure black silhouette - when I wanted to retain some shadow detail. I left the shutter speed at 1/1250 but compensated / bracketed and the shot I took at f5.6 seemed to have about the right balance. I could have used an ND filter but I specifically wanted to retain the contrast between the blue sky above and the sunset below.
Apart from conversion to TIFF and then re-sizing, the only post-processing has been a minor sharpen using USM. This is a full frame photo (no cropping whatsoever).
Hope you like it - cosntructive criticism is welcome, as ever. |

This is beautiful!
I have always wanted but never get the chance to take something where the rays of the sun go through the clouds.
When in doubt I usually bracket my shots too. Is the curvature on the horizon caused by the lens?
Yes, I enjoyed my trip to Egytp and Jordan very much.
