The little open air restaurants have just been mounted again for the night and are opening ; the bigger crowd will arrive after sunset.

This view was taken just before the opening of the film festival of Marrakech, a giant screen was being mounted on the west side of the square.

South of this main square (Djemma el Fna), is the very famous Koutoubia minaret :

(From ilove-marrakesh.com website :
« built by Sultan Abdeloumen in the 12th century, the « booksellers Mosque » owes its name to the hundreds of manuscript sellers who set up shop around it upon its foundation. Its architecture and richness of decoration make it one of the masterpieces of Hispano-Moorish art. Its minaret is the elder brother of the Giralda (in Seville) and the Tour Hassan (in Rabat). 69m high (77 at the tip of the lanternon), it is built from Gueliz limestone and its external decoration, differing on each face, is a mixture of floral and graphic ornementation, interlacings, bands of earthenware tiling and intermingled arcading.

Today, we can still see it from far off on the Haouz plain, proudly rearing above the City’s rampart.)
