January 2005 - Western Sahara (occupied by Morrocco).

The Western Sahara is a republic, named "al-Dschumhūriyya al-'Arabiyya as-Sahrāwiyya ad-Dīmuqrātiyya" or "Democratic Republic of Sahara". Actually the situation there is still unclear, the area is occupied by Morocco or under Morrocan administration, but the people there (called Sahawis or Sahauris) want to form their own country.

Year after year passes by and neither Morocco nor the International Community want to decide what to do next. The danger for this area is, that if no decision is made the next few years, the danger of the arise of a new western sahara conflict between Morocco and the so called "POLISARIO" movement with many casulties.

In the late seventies there were fights between the POLISARIO and the Moroccan army, after 350.000 Moroccan civilists occupied the area in the so called "Green March", leaving 25.000 Sahauris dead. Still now about 160.000 Sahauris that supported the POLISARIO live in the border area to Algeria, near Tindouf, dependent on international help.

The situation there today has calmed a bit, but the occupation by Morocco is still an unresolved problem or will lead to many problems.

Driving is one of my passions, thats what I want to show with this picture. You almost can drive throu Western Sahara freely with military checks every 100 to 150 km. The area there is ideal for driving long distances with almost no traffic or changement of nature. After yesterdays very thoughtful mood while posting the "Freund und Leid" - image I'd like to show the situation I like best to have a thought. Driving driving driving. Thinking thinking thinking. No changement on the left (rocks, sand stones) no changement on the rigt (the Atlantic Ocean), straight ahead. Just straight ahead.

I'm dreaming about this kind of road.
Good blues on the radio and flat line to horizon...
Pure meditation.

The star's missing in front ;-)
Great shot, Martin, a long way to go. Well done, centering the road. Underlines the mood of an endless wide, just the ones in front of you to get some comfort by the compagnions. Burned horizon represents the heat of the desert... Well done.

Nice shot, Martin! A very good capture of the desert driving feeling. I like the colours and the kind of fuzziness in the distance. And a good composition. I am actually surprised by the amount of traffic... Great job!

A great composition, Martin! I have a confession to make... I'm a dedicated Drive & Snap guy myself, but I haven't posted any of mine yet... The landscape and the vanishing road is interesting, and I like the way you include the wheel. Really a nice D&S job!
Regards,
Pablo
