WHAT:
I am busy trying out different set-ups with my studio flashes. Recently had to do some photoshoots and found a lot of distracting shadows on the BG.

WHY:
Not having people at the time to model for me, I had to pose for myself and had to guess where to stand to get the desired result with all the flashes.

HOW:
Well, in this case I set up 2 lights with brollies (next to me) aimed for the BG - some of the light would then shine on me slightly from behind. I then possitioned my Canon flash higher up behind my camera on a slave unit. The latter will give some fill-lighting on my face without any shadows on the BG.

HOW-2:
Hopefully people will tell me how-2-improve my lighting if it needs to be improved...

PP:
Cropped, levels (darker), cloned out some odd hair, border.

The light is very good! and it is very good technique to capture without the reflection in the glasses...

Next time... please use a model.... ha ha ha

Hi Markus,

Beautiful, just beautiful, did I say Beautiful, oops I did. LOL
Well done on the capture and composition.
Uhmm, where is the lens on YOUR left side.? ;)

Mike

Gorgeous model ........ is missing but you will do.
Seems that the lighting set-up works well enough, with no bright spots and no excessive shadows, with relief to the facial structure looking fine from here.
The only area for negative comment is the final presentation on a PC display.
Your charming model is presented as for a passport photograph. I realise that if this was a stunning young lady, there would be a different approach but here's what I see for what it's worth.
USUALLY, and that means that this is not a pre-requisite, the eyes are the first target for the viewer and SHOULD be on an intersection of vertical and horizontal thirds lines - IDEALLY.
For a PC display, and I do NOT mean for an actual real-life display, a white frame is the worst possible choice, There are simple reasons why this is so and, if you request, I will e-mail you 'A Brief Theory of PC Photo Frames'.
I have done a small, fast, simple WS for you which I cannot attach until tomorrow. I have left your youthful visage soft, as we older men do need a little help but the only other changes are the crop and the frame change.
All this out of mere interest in the subject and are just alternative views. Tomorrow I will attach, for better or for worse. OK?

Very good looking model, I like the way it came out. I am a total disaster when it comes to studio portraits. Like the lighting on the background that bounces back to you, looks very natural not harsh at all. You are missing the lens on the left side. Must be the way the light fell on your face.

With my limited technical knowlegde all I can compare this to is my failed attempts at self portraits. So compared to that this is exellent. The missing lens is a bit strange but overall a good experiment.

deksels goed gedoen! goeie self portret

Agree with Archie on this one, in particular there being no reflection, but also to rather use a model next time... :)

Lighting looks very good, I think you have achieved what you set out to achieve here!

Well done

Carlo

so u r posing for passport photo?
purely studio work. not any rules.
lighting is good n no shadows

Hi Markus,
This photo is very strange, it seems you went to the studio photographer to order a passport photo.
No emotion, no message, just a "raw" pic ...
I am puzzled.
And teh frame is strange too, the blue line, what is the point ?
Sorry to say.
Sylvie

You did a fine job indeed. I know it's hard to do a self portrait as I have tried myself. Well done on the lighting.

Goeie self portrait.

Hello Markus, you did very well for someone all on his own :)

The close-up is perfect, your head position is well done with your body, a slight shadow coming from the collar of your shirt, but maybe the bg is a bit too light. Because I prefer darker bg for portraits :)

But overall it is well done. It's really not easy to do it all on your own.

Cheers, Yan :)
p.s. Thx very much for your visit in my Rideau Falls photo :)

Howzit Markus.
Een klein clickie vir jou vir all die goeie plaatjies. ek genie die baie lekker.
grappie, Jan

Hi Markus,
I read the exellent comment of kitfloreno and found that his WS has been removed so I tried to do it myself just to learn things.
