I came across this Hornbill in the Kruger National Park during a recent visit to South-Africa. He (she?) sat with a mate on a branch close to the ground. I managed to get about 10 shots before they flew away.

For those of you who like the technical detail I found the following:-
The Yellow-billed Hornbill is a medium sized bird, with length between 48 to 60 cm, characterized by a long yellow beak with a casque (only in males). The skin around the eyes and in the malar stripe is vivid red-coloured. White belly, grey neck, and black back with abundant white spots and stripes.

Name: Tockus leucomelas

Distribution: Southern to northeastern Africa.

Diet Description: The Yellow-billed Hornbill feed mainly on the ground surface, where they forage for seeds, small insects, spiders and scorpions. Termites and ants are a preferred food source in the dry season.

Habitat: Dry thorn fields and broad leafed woodlands.

Reproduction: Females lay 3 to 4 white eggs in their nest cavities and incubate them for about 25 days. Juveniles take about 45 days to mature.

Hello Andrei !

I missed your recent shots. It seems we travelled at the same time (^_^) ,me in Cuba you in RSA. What a look this beauty has.
Stunning close-up view. The focus on the eye is great. I wonder if it would not have been better without the branch ..... Hummmmm.
Anyway, I great shot.
Bravo!
Robert

Hi Andrei,
Hope you had a great time in South Africa in April.
We did see the hornbill and thought they looked great, however this close-up I did not see them. So thanks for sharing this lovely detailed picture!

Hi Andrei! You have a much better shot of the hornbill than I could get. Wonder if it is perhaps the same one :-) Only joking - there are so many of them there but difficult to photograph since they do not often sit still. Nice clarity and detail of this funny looking bird.
