I was at the Witwater (literally meaning "white water") Safari Lodge and Spa over the weekend. It is a private game reserve situated in the Waterberg Mountains in the Limpopo(Northern) Province in South Africa.
On the farm they have 3 cheetahs, 2 males and a female. The males have formed a bond of sorts and have developed a knack for bringing down quite large prey.
We followed them on an open Land Rover for an hour or so, stalking a herd of antelope. All of a sudden they burst from their cover and chased the herd. Their speed was incredible. We missed the actual kill, but were there soon after. They took a 5 minute rest and then started snacking on their meal.
We sat in the vehicle watching them eat for about another hour, and I managed to get some good shots. This one was my favourite.
Let me know what you think! |

Hey Doc, seriously close! Very nice picture, I like the tight crop however I tend to want to see more of the kill. Otherwise nice shot!
Hallo Niel,
Very warm - late in the evening - sunllight, wonderful sharp details and good dov - sure this must be one of your favorites.
How exciting this must have been witnessing a hunt - good for them that they succeeded, they have to eat...
I witnessed 3 lionesses going in for the kill and we were instructed not to make a move or noise - so I did not make any picture (could have in hindsight) but I will never forget that moment (our lionesses were not so lucky, they did not make a kill.)
TFS this beautiful picture.
