This shot was taken at a watering hole in the Madikwe Private Game Reserve in South Africa.
The Waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiprymnus) is an antelope found in Africa. Waterbuck stand 100 to 130 centimetres at the shoulder and weigh from 160 to 240 kilograms. Their coats are reddish brown in colour and become progressively darker with age; they also have a white 'bib' under their throats and a white ring on their rumps surrounding their tails. The waterproofing secretions of the waterbuck's sweat glands produces an unpleasant odor in its meat. The long spiral structured horns, found only in males, sweep back and up. They are found in scrub and savanna areas near water where they eat grass. Despite its name, the waterbuck does not spend much time in the water, but will take refuge there to escape predators.
I patiently waited for the water to be perfectly still and calm, as to get a nice reflection. However, the other antelopes in the herd were playing in the water and causing small ripples throughout the watering hole. So I ended up with a slightly distorted reflection, but I still think it looks nice.
I just cropped the image slightly and added my initials and date. No other modifications.
Let me know what you think. |

Hi Niel,
I think a reflection should be a bit distorted.
It looks totally lovely, you can not ask the others to stay put until you made a picture.
How I would love to visit a Game Reserve again.
TFS and all the best wishes
voor een gezond en gelukkig 2008.

Hi Niel
This is a lovely composition, the reflection is superb and well captured here.
Your cropping looks good, perhaps placing the waterbuck (and its reflection) slightly off-centre to the left of this compo would be more appealing but this compo is nonetheless impressive. Congratulations and TFS.

Martyn

One of the best shots of a waterbuck that I have seen. I like the way you captured the gaze towards the camera and the reflection is beautiful! Great colours and light too. Composition can be a wee bit less central but considering the reflection the portrait orientation works well enough!

Hi Niel,
the reflection looks good - so does exposure.
Nice use of vertical format too.
Well done. Best regards, Daniel
