Waiting….

The ‘rent-a-camel’ business wasn’t booming that early Sunday morning when I went to the Giza plateau. The camel owner sits and waits for the tourist. Behind the man is the Pyramid of Cheops.

With my private taxi driver Ali, I went from down town Cairo to the pyramids. Even like many others I was surprised by the location of this World Wonder it is situated right at or almost in the Cairo suburb on the south side of the city. So while you are still driving in the streets of Cairo (if you survive the insanity of the traffic by the way) with all the buildings around you and driving to the south together with the city view the Pyramids appear in this extraordinary view. Looking at this photo you would not have that impression and think the Pyramids of Giza (or Gizeh) are situated in an abandoned and remote area.

My taxi driver Ali knew where I could rent a camel for a reasonable price apparently family and of course he would share in the profit. So you could see on a sunny Sunday morning a Dutch tourist on a camel (poor beast) on the Giza plateau and it looked like I was the only one there. Of course a made dozens of pictures but this one is more ‘original’. On my camel trip I encountered a camel riding Egyptian Tourist Policeman. He came towards me and made a nice gesture and want to shake my hand. “Friendly man" I thought. Then he asked my guide to make a picture of this handshake. “Nice man" I thought, after telling him where I was from “Oh Holland...allemachtigprachtig achtentachtig”, he said. “Funny man" I thought and want to say goodbye but it was totally surprising the polite policemen went with a grind to me and said “You take picture you pay me money.” And I thought “No way you brutal camel swindler no change with me, mucky sharper!” So I gave the order to my guide to leave and shook my head and said with a loud clear “La” which is “No” in Arabic and hoped the Tourist Policeman would not shoot me. He didn’t but I’m sure he wasn’t happy. By the way during my stay in Cairo I had to use the word “La” and “No” uncountable times in those few days of my stay even more than I ever had done and ever will do.

On this morning I was lucky to have a quite blue sky at this spot. The Cairo city (air pollution) and the desert dust makes that the sky here is often very grey.

PS-talk:
- adjusted blue tone
- increased saturation (+10)
- increased contrast

The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only remaining of the Seven Wonders of the World. Most Egyptologists agree the pyramid was constructed over a 20 year period concluding around 2560 BC.It is generally believed the Great Pyramid was built as the tomb of Fourth dynasty Egyptian pharaoh Khufu (Cheops), after whom it is sometimes called Khufu's Pyramid or the Pyramid of Khufu. Hi Hans... one of my favorite countries that i wannaknow any day is Egypt, great shot of this excellent place my friend and thanks by the note... TFS

strong colors, wonderful compo, perfect!
tfs!

Your notes are so interesting Hans. I enjoy them so much and have learnt such a lot too.
I also expected the Pyramids of Giza to be way out away from civilisation. My daughter and her friends came back from Egypt not 100% happy with the males there (I'm saying that nicely!). Not even 5% happy!
I like your composition showing us many different types of construction, with teh pyramid overseeing it all.
Thank you for sharing
Janice

Hallo Hans.
Zeer bijzondere opname van deze man. Er was dus geen bus halte..
De plaats is al bijzonder maar je opname heeft er iets speciaals van gemaakt.

Hello Hans,
the whole afternoon I was watching a documentary of this place, so this one fits right into the theme of the day. Great compsotion, and very well framed. The POV is excellent it allows a great view of the pyramid.
You telling a great story, it seems you learned a very important word to communicate in Agypt ;-).

rent a camel eh? now THATS something we don't have around here!! Great shot and great title..the camel and owner add alot to the pyramid photo..like the colors etc..very nice..TFS
Donna :o)

a strong comp of this exotic place, love all the lines, but most of all the figure, that puts the whole thing in perspective, thanx, M, (*_*)

Sooooo hot - I can feel the sand between my teeth and it's sooooo hot!
Hi Hans, wasn't it? When I visited this place I was glad to come back to the hotel for a refreshing jump into the pool. But it's a marvelous and interesting place, thanks for sharing. You are also travelling around the world ?!? I love Asia so much.
Thanks and greetings

Nice photo. As there is noone else in sight it looks as though he might wait for some time. Alternatively, one can say these pyrimids have waited thousands of years for you to take a great photo ;-)
The composition is really nice. The rent-a-camel looks so small against the imposing pyrimid. The line of the sky is also really well placed. Finally the textures in the sand add much interest to the photo.

superb photo and a great story to go with it, hans! :-)
fantastic and unusual view of the pyramid, perfectly composed
with the lonely camel shading its owner positioned in the left
corner, great sand colors and a clear blue sky which really makes you feel the heat.
actually the WS-photo is the real important document with the friendly hand-shaking..LaLaLa..*g*.
wonderful job & have a great day, thor.

The light is very warm and the shapes of the building are excellent. Beautiful shot!
