| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
| I went through my old photos and came across this one. I took this photo in 2005 with a Canon Powershot in the Baviaans area, South Afica. It was very cold and this tap was leaking during the night and icy stalachtites formed. I thought it was worth sharing with TL friends. |

I had no idea that it got cold enough in SA for ice! Thanks for the informative shot and the interesting subject.
Photographically - it's pretty bad. Sorry, no offence intended, and in your absolute defence it's an old shot, long before you received any input into how to take better ones! But a good opportunity to make some observations, and perhaps you could have used some PP work to improve it before posting?
For example - the date stamp! Mortal sin! Clone it or crop it but definitely remove it.
And the composition - the ice is square in the middle of the frame. Terrible place to put your subject! Something off-centre would have far more impact, and would eliminate all the needless, unhelpful space around the edges. It could easily be cropped into a stronger composition.
Re: the original shooting: the POV is very lazy. How about if you crouched down and used the DOF to isolate the ice against a distant, blurred backround? How about if you took the shot from low on the other side - catching the effect of sunlight shining through the ice?
Thank you though for having the guts to share this, and providing a wonderful learning opportunity.
