[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The cold weather we are having in Calgary reminded me of our Antarctica trip Jan 2007.
This photo of a couple of Gentoo Penguins was taken at Yankee Harbour, Antarctic Peninusla. Yankee harbour is a former American Whaling station. Now only whale bones and penguins are found on the beach. It was really cold this day and the wind was blowing at more than 100 km/hr later on (maybe only 50 km/hour at the time of the photo). I was barely stable -forget about the camera. I had to get close to the ground to brace myself better. I set the camera to shutter priority at 1/750 s to combat wind noise. It was all worth it!

Oh, are they pretty. Gentoos - I don't know them but I love their colours and patterns.
Super shot of the pair of them Karin, and it doesn't look cold at all. But 100 km/hr - that's windy!!
Well done
Janice

hi karin, this is a such a good shot, the composition and depth of field are outstanding, such a great backdrop to this image, excellent work, happy new-years to you and your family,

Wow, what a trip you did. I'm just reading a book I received for Christmass who is the story of a scientific mission made by Quebecers on the sail boat Sedna IV. They live nine months stuck in the ice to make experience on the Global warming. I did'nt know we can go there as tourist.

I'm happy to see that my camera is able to go so far, I have a K100D too. How do you like your Tamron lens, I can't decide what zoom I will buy next.

To learn about the Mission Antartica here is there web site.

What great work Karen. This is stunning and the POV is perfect. How lucky you are to live so close to the lovely Mts and have the opportunity to have gone to such a great place. I can only dream of the opportunity to capture such a beautiful and perfect image such as this.

Very nice shot indeed, Karin. My in-laws went to Antartica in December and I saw similar pictures by them when I was home for Christmas.

The composition here is lovely, sharpness and DOF spot on. Very nice shot, I am hugely envious!

HI Karin, wow! Superb catch and an awesome trip that you made!
You did a great low pov on the gentoos! And the light is very well managed!
Very sharp!
This is a trip that I would like to do!

Very well done!

Happy New Year to you too.

Yan :)
ps: many thx for your visit and great words in my gallery

Hi Karin
That low point of view was a good idea and gave a beautiful angle, and placed you at the birds' level. Good natural colors and perfect lighting with an accurate depth of field. A very artistic photo

Hi Karin
Quite spectacular, it was well worth all the work to capture this image. Beautiful and sharp (just the way I like it) even with the difficult conditions. Good idea to put camera on shutter priority. Have a great year and happy photo hunting.

Paul

Karin nice view and great compositon I love it ,,good work

Recep

You had the chance to go in Antartica to take some pictures of them! Impressive! In the Biodome i had the opportunity too but it's other complications. Glasses are a lot reflective, many people but even that it was a thrill to try have something presentable from those wonderfull birds!

They have a good posture who even amuse me a little. Colors are nice!

Fantastic Nature shot, great colors and details. I like the way they squint into the glaring sun. Good lighting control.
Cheers
Otto

Hi Karin,

Excellent work, it seems like they have climbed up the hogh grounds. Very well composed. TFS

This is a fine double pose, and good DOF creates a fine feeling of depth in the frame...
