My first Egret sighting/outing with my friend/photo mentor (cybermeritam-also on TL)today since I bought my D90. Had more than a few failed attempts to get sharp enough shots and I finally resorted to using AF-C focusing using 3D tracking to keep these extremely fast birds in focus. I shot using shutter priority mode and set auto ISO on, allowing it to reach up to ISO 400 at tops if needed. Setting my metering mode to Spot, I watched my exposure meter carefully and set -0.33 EV bias to reduce chances pf feather OE in these white feathered birds. It is not easy to photograph these birds well let alone catch them in action! I awaited and anticipated this shot and used my continuous shooting mode to catch this amazing fish catching sequence. Actually I loved every passing second of this event and felt my pulse racing in eager anticipation- it is one of a kind of feeling-believe me!
I could not get any closer as these birds are highly irritable and don't tolerate human presence well. Set my lens to 300mm (450mm on D90 crop sensor). Then I chose a shutter speed of 1/500 sec and in hindsight, could have dialled in 1/800 second to freeze the action at the expense of more noise/grain. Will have to try this again next week but this is what I ended up with and felt relatively happy. I cropped the final image to remove some BG distractions and resized the image for upload.

A lovely closeup capture of these lovely egrets 'in action'! I like the great contrast between the soft colors of the birds and the water. The mirror reflections make wonders here. The sharpness is great and the perfect POV works well here.

I haven't tried similar situation with my D90 but I could suppose that you next time use ISO 400 because the image with D90 at this sensitivity has very low noise (you could even use 640 if needed with satisfactory results).
I would have cropped more (I show you, hope you don't mind). With more cropping one could also better see how you managed with your try. Waiting for your next trial.

Haha..we having fun yeah..hehe...so i can see now, how power the 70mm-300mm VRII lens fixing on D90...not bad at all... i read u note too..very interesting and very useful...keep it up bro..One more thing i would like to tell you..i do agree with Pentti and his workshop that he did to you..actually that is the correct one,the composition and the cropped..next time we do more careful bro...we both learn and need to improve our skill time to time..ok my friend...Give me 5...hehe

really decisive moment of wild birds,
white figures are very graceful and the fishing style is amazing.
