[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Okay, this is another post from yesterdays outing shooting egrets in a local river close to my place. I gave it this title because of the previous bad post I uploaded which was compositionally weak and the feedback was taken aboard. So today I dug deeper into my files and chose this one. This was the moment of truth....no "R-egrets" from yesterday-so there is the reason for my title.

As for the photo, the rest was history. I chose a slower shutter speed of 1/320sec to show movement of the glorious wings as the Egret is about to take flight at launch. I took a gamble with the shutter speed as there was always risk of motion blur of the head and eyes....but i think this was the correct value. Any suggestions on this point open to discussion and I am interested to see how other nature photographers with experience would have to say.

Camera settings:

Metering: spot
Mode: Pv
AF-C (3D colour track focusing)
EV bias: -0.33
Shutter mode: H-speed continuous
WB: Auto
ISO:Auto with 400ISO limit

PP work:

1) crop out negative space and select rule of thirds composition.

2)Sharpen

3)Contrast tweak-reduce fill-light and increase shadow slide

4)Re-size,save and upload!

Any comments, critiques, workshops welcome and thanks for dropping by....

cheers,

Dilshan

Oh mate, I don't know about that title ... hehe. Baaaaaaad pun. :)

Shot itself is eyecatching. I wonder if there is still too much space in this - when I think about nature shots that are truly breathtaking, they're the ones that give us a view we don't normally see: they bring us in close to the action, as opposed to this shot - in which 80% of the photo is empty space.

If the ascending bird is the subject, is it possible to bring us in as close as possible with just a little lead-space to the right of it?

If the bird-and-reflection is the subject, how about a vertical format for the photo, eliminating the negative space to the left?

I get the feeling you wanted to show the ascending egret, and its reflection in the water, and the ripples it left behind - but perhaps that is trying to show too much, and thus diluting the effect you could otherwise have?

dear Dilshan Mahdi,
this figure is very graceful,
you succeed to capture really decisive moment in the nature.
rippled water and reflection of the bird make wonderful space in this picture.
and deep tone of water shows us the white figure so impressive.
thank you for your excellent shot,
Akihisa

Good catch, Dilshan!
I like the reflection as well

Hi Dilshan,
thanks for you critique on my ochid shot. Really appreciate it very much, as it will improve my composition and presentation.
This shot of your is very dramatic and the speed could be well seen and felt.
I like the blurry motion of the wings and the reflection on the water.
So ell composed and well thought presentation.

Foozi
