I was out again today looking for Kingfishers in the mangroves of Kampong Ayer (Water Village) after a long day at work. As I was waiting at the roadside next to the water jetty, a person approached me and started asking about my camera and photography. We got chatting about the place and he gave me some great tips on where to find the best spots and so on.

Then I asked him if he was waiting for someone and he said he was waiting for his two kids who were with his grandfather for the weekend. He said they were on their way and are coming out from the water village. Suddenly his eyes lit up and he said, "here they come!". To my surprise they were not coming on foot but on a tricycle with their grandfather as the cycle- man! I was simply touched and amazed at the same time. As they passed me I asked him if I can take a quick snap of them while they were heading off and to my surprise he said yes. So I did not have time to mess with any settings and took the shot at 1/160 sec in spot metering mode.

Had I been able to move further back I could have zoomed right in and thrown the BG into complete blur with the long lens but I did not have the time to do this. I converted the image into B&W and cropped out some FG distractions. I cloned out a lamp post in the BG which was distracting and resized for TL upload.

Any comments, critiques, suggestions welcome and thanks for dropping by.

Regards,

Dilshan

Hi Dilshan,
A fine street life picture in B&W. Excellent sharpness on the faces, good DOF with the persons nicely sharp and the background blurred. A great posting my friend.
Hans

Ciao Dilshan,

A great alternative transportation!
I like the classic B & W here!
I find your picture very nice, pleasant for look at.
Splendid detailed image, amazing B / W too.
Very well composition and presentation.

Best regards,

Sergio

great shot Dilshan... it pays to have a long lens... wish I have one too.. lovely shot of this family on bicycle, let me try to do a workshop to improve it and post it in awhile... but over all the photo is a good capture... just want to play with it and see what can be done... TFS

Hi Dilshan!

A very touching photo and story! You know real-life photos are my favorite even though I've never taken one. You have a great eye for these photos. I think this reveals the depth of person in you. I love the B&W. I haven't done one of these either, but really want to. This captured moment in time is priceless!

TFS

Great shot .. I love to see images like this, of daily life things in far away countries. SO interesting!!
Love the direct eye contact from the little girl. The grey tones are wonderful, and the shot is very sharp.
Great job in capturing this scene Dilshan
