I'm just back in Singapore after a wee trip to Angkor Wat where I had the honour of meeting up with our very own Greenbaron. We met on Thursday and on Friday morning we went to see the sunrise at Angkor Wat. I'll say more about Hans when he is back and can defend himself :-)

Sunrise at Angkor is a bit of a cliche but it really has to be done. This shot is dedicated to Rew, he knows why!

This was my third trip to Siem Reap and I wanted to try and do something a little different, so used the fisheye a lot - this is one such example. I think it adds something to the shot, maybe a little more unusual than the standard landscape images of this wonderful temple. I'll post some of those as well, I'm sure!

"Angkor Wat (or Angkor Vat) is a temple at Angkor, Cambodia, built for King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century as his state temple and capital city. The largest and best-preserved temple at the site, it is the only one to have remained a significant religious centre since its foundation—first Hindu, dedicated to Vishnu, then Buddhist. The temple is the epitome of the high classical style of Khmer architecture. It has become a symbol of Cambodia, appearing on its national flag, and it is the country's prime attraction for visitors.

Angkor Wat combines two basic plans of Khmer temple architecture: the temple mountain and the later galleried temples. It is designed to represent Mount Meru, home of the gods in Hindu mythology: within a moat and an outer wall 3.6 km (2.2 miles) long are three rectangular galleries, each raised above the next. At the centre of the temple stands a quincunx of towers. Unlike most Angkorian temples, Angkor Wat is oriented to the west; scholars are divided as to the significance of this. The temple is admired for the grandeur and harmony of the architecture, its extensive bas-reliefs and for the numerous devatas adorning its walls."

Shot in RAW, fiddled slightly with RGB levels, jpegged, resized, sharpened. No crop. n.b. there is a small mark in the top/middle of the shot - it could be a mark on the lens, but it doesn't show in other shots so is possibly a bird, there were a few flying about. Either way, I left it but should prob have cloned it out.

Very interesting photo with great colors. A lot of culture for us to learn in your note. Thanks a lot!

Really great view. I like the colors and reflections.
Nice POV.
TFS!

Hi Richard,
What an incredible shot! I like the super W I D E angle you used. It works very well. The sunrise is a perfect backdrop and the calm water gives a good reflection. Wish I could be there to see the moment.
Great photo again,

Darren

Grrr ... you just did this one for the points, didn't you!

Must admit, it's a good one. Very good. Wide-angle used well, metering perfect, saturation excellent, composition out of a textbook.

Good job, really good!

Rew

This is fantastic!! Beautiful colors! Really awesome picture. One for more favorites.

Hi Richard,

I should schedule visiting this place . . It's a great idea presenting it with fisheye . .
Reflection is clearly captured . .
I like it . .

Tfs,
Tjutjut

What up my friend, do I need to defend my self? :-)
Great capture with the fish eye lens. I like the adjusted (?) red tones I makes the sunrise even look more dramatic. Rew must be happy with such an unique posting :-)Great memories Rich I happy I did met you. Good luck in HKG.
Hans

N.B. did you survived the hangover?

Somebody is having fun with the fisheye. Nice mood you captured here. I would have added a bit more contrast and brightness , as you can see in the WS.
TFS,
Pedro

Hi Richard, excellent use of that lens. Good colour and strong silhouettes, a magnificent scene.

Dave
PS I have not forgotten CS3 :)

Hi Richard,
Great colours, silhouettes and reflections, I am not a fan of the Fisheye lens but it has certainly enhanced this shot, great work my friend and I'm glad you had a good time with the GreenCanon (I bet he was beggin to use your kit LOL)

Bugger the bird mate, this is a stunning image !

The lens really does add to the image. The lower left and right corners a bit dark, but that's just personal taste.

Nice one !

Hi Richard
Awesome shot, you've worked well with the fish eye lens to produce a stunning picture
Regards Pez

Richard the fisheye provides a great perspective - wonder burnt reds and yellows in the arching horizon. Really like the reflections the you got with that lens.

dan

wow, it seems that it was a great inspiring meetimg. Really wonderful !!!

thanks,

ps.The Bayon is wonderful, too, but that frame is too eyecatching (too high contrast for the soft grey tones of the image, IMHO)

Ahh, so you got to meet BIG GREEN??? Is he as tall as he looks?? Did you leave without him chewing on your leg?? HAHAHA! This is a marvelous shot! Just amazing hot the wide angle bends and frames the shot! Very nice Richard!

Hi Richard
Wonderful shot, great POV and a special wonderful light, great composition and presentation. Well done.
Jens.

I must say I joined TE after seeing sunrise pictures of Angkor Wat. Your fisheye provides a new perspective, an engaging one, that I haven't seen. The silhouettes are well defined and the colors are terrific. Best regards.

Hi Richard!

Thanks for sharing this wonderful shot of Angkor Wat. I never tire of looking at it... The lighting here is very dramatic which is enhanced by the use of a sweeping fisheye.

I'm not always fond of the fish-eye effect, but here it really adds to the shot. You're right about the stripe, cloning it would be better I think. The sky is nice with all those clouds, but I like the reflection better. Didn't you consider putting the horizon in the centre here to show more of it? I know, centering is "discouraged", but sometimes it does work. On the other hand, you'd lose a lot of the fish-eye "bending" effect...
Anyway, I like it. After all, you used "better equipment" than Hans ;o)

Hello Richard !

Catching up , as i missed a lot of great stuff lately. Great to see your images again, and read you had fun with hans . A sunrise at Angkor wat , that is a pretty exotic TL meeting photoshoot.

Spectacular result capturing the early light over the pond. I bet you were not alone.

Cheers!
Robert

PS. BTW , if I buy a new camera , I will surely stick to Canon (^_^) and the great lenses zoom lenses they offer, despite the great quality of Nikon products ..... Sorry Hans (^_^)

Hi Richard,

This one is so nice.
It's so difficult to select between these two shots(yours and Hans's shot). Interesting, Two friends, one subject and two POV, anyway both is very nice.
