”Wan dollah pleez”

While driving around at Angkor in a tuk-tuk I observed a nice scene near the East Mebon. A herd of buffalos peacefully grazing near a shallow pond. To the tuk-tuk driver I yelled to stop and he did...two hundred meters further.

So a took s short walk to the buffalos and made some shots. Because I suffered back light I decided to go around the pond. While doing that a small hut popped up from the bush I waved to a woman which was busy with her kids. I ended up at the other side of the pond, but apparently I was not unnoticed...

A young boy came out of the bush meanwhile towing a huge buffalo on a rope...he came towards me and said, while I took some pictures: “Wan dollah please...” (One dollar please) This made me laugh so hard the buffalo backed off a bit. With a big smile I gave the little boy a one dollar note, he made my day. Suddenly his brothers showed up...while walking back to the tuk-tuk I yelled to the brothers: “No more dollars” (and I was NOT lying)...meanwhile chased by the little Cambodians. I hopped in the tuk-tuk and drove off...leaving great memories to the little boy in the red short :-)

Great story to go with the cultural moment.
The boys smile is first, then his bare feet, then the path to the buffalo, then the background trees -- great composition that made me explore the photo. TFS. K2

Hi Hans

A superb daily life scene, with good inclusion of the boy & the buffaloes. There were hundreds of these beggar kids at Poi Pet, on the Thai border, when I went to Cambodia in January 2002. The authorities have since moved them on, because they were pestering tourists too much. Sad, but true. Tfs!

Hi Hans,

One dollar can get this lovely picture . . a memory that will be remembered . .
He looks happy . . maybe after getting one dollar from you . .
And the buffalo is watching you, to make sure you give him dollar . . ha ha . .
Great shot my friend . . Lovely image . .

Tfs,
Tjutjut

Many thanks for your kind words on Fawn .

Hello Hans,
This is such a wholesome image. I can tell you are a prepared and a well read traveler. I also carry $1 bills for the same purpose, and it gives me much pleasure - sort of give and take. Love the expression on the water buffalo, sort of like asking 'what's up?'. My best regards on a damp day in Wash D.C. Danilo

Great travel story and a good picture to go with it. POV and composition work well, especially with the eye contact with boy and buffalo.
Thanks for sharing

I really enjoyed reading your note which goes so well with this picture. I've had alot of similar situations in the Philippines. The lighting and colors here are very nice as is the lighting. This makes me smile. Thanks!
