"Ta Prohm is the modern name of a temple at Angkor, Cambodia, built in the Bayon style largely in the late 12th and early 13th centuries and originally called Rajavihara. Located approximately one kilometre east of Angkor Thom and on the southern edge of the East Baray near Tonle Bati, it was founded by the Khmer King Jayavarman VII as a Mahayana Buddhist monastery and university. Unlike most Angkorian temples, Ta Prohm has been left in much the same condition in which it was found: the photogenic and atmospheric combination of trees growing out of the ruins and the jungle surroundings have made it one of Angkor's most popular temples with visitors."

Recently had a long weekend back in Cambodia. I really do enjoy going up there - the people, the food, the history, the photographic opportunities - it's a wonderful place and a great break from the sterile and air-conditioned world of Singapore.

Tried something different here from my previous colour postcard-style Cambodian shots.

A previous shot of Ta Prohm can be found here.

Shot in RAW. Adjusted w/b, but dont think i needed to given the rest that went on. Converted to jpeg and in CS2 did some dodging/burning, converted to b/w, fiddled with brightness/contrast and ended up with this. Then resized and sharpened.

ISO 320, f5, 1/320. The lighting was really difficult - some areas in blazing sunshine, others in very dark shadow.

*** added a workshop, just lighter to see some of the stonework.

Hi Richard - good effort with the very difficult lighting, and B&W works well. Composition is good, maybe a little dark for me, then again we all have different screen settings... Got to get to Cambodia sometime, looks great..
Cheers
David

Hello Richard
Amazing shot, Extra details , and excellent POV and DOF. B&W IS THE RIGHT CHOICE.You controlled the lighting very well.

Well done
Best regards
Maged

hi richard.
definitely not a postcard shot. it is way better than that.
the pov is captivating and draws you into the pic.
posting in b/w was the best idea. colour could not have conveyed the feeling of age and mystery that i am getting from this.
i love the diversity of your images. it always pays to look outside the 'box'.
thanks for your inspiration.
Brian

Hi Richard.

Almost three shots for the price of one here. Firstly, the tree is a beautiful specimen with sufficient shape and contrast to stand alone against the sky. Second, the moody building beneat. The third is the image as it stands.

It's an excellent image of the place, however, my only suggestion would be to get a little more light into the building itself - as it is such a spectacular place. Very difficult to do, I know, with the range of tones and high contrast. However, I'll have a go with Nikon Capture NX and see what the control points allow me to do.

Overall, superb study of what looks like a fascinating place.

Paul.

I looked at all the ws’s Richard and I think my choice is this one. I love the atmosphere that seems to hang on this one. The area’s of sun show of the beautiful stone very well so that we really don’t need to see into every corner to get the beauty there. The composition is what strikes me the most, with the tree at such a wonderful angle. Unique and exciting. I love the Black and white.
Warm Regards
Wanda

Hi Richard,
Love the way you compose picture. There is a good correlations on the tree and the building. Both were aged and drawing nice details for your composition.

B/W presentation is a good choice to depict an antique look. As a personal preference, I pick the one you'd just gave a bit more dodging in your WS.

Regards,
Ramdan.

I've seen many photos from this area and this is the most original view I've seen in a white! I love the looming tree! It's a moody shot, very scary almost! I like this alot Richard, I prefer this version for mood!

Hi Richard, Good creative angle and light making this an unusual contribution. Your series and comments on Angkor Wat area make it look very inviting. Hope to go there soon. TFS. Murray.

HI Richard
I looked at the workshops and I do prefer this one.
The darkness gives it a cemetary kind of look, a bit on the spooky side.
A great moody shot, the light reflecting to gives us just a glint of the texture of the stones.
Nice work
Dot

Excellent work of Art.

I do like the intricacies that the workshops bring out. This is a very interesting subject. Well done.

Kind regards,
Jim

Hi Richard,

This photo exudes mystery, suspense, and wonder all in one. When I first saw it, it was eerie in a sort of way, must be the tree shape and angle. ...almost haunting, but I know it's a temple. It's funny how the mind works.

The details, black and white, and point of view of the tree really give it a unique mood.

...thanks for sharing, ~ Lisa

Well Richard your B & W side lite image looks like the place where the Wicked Witch of the West would live. Dark and forboding.

Hi Richard,
I really like this shot of the old temple. The B&W color was a great choice for this. The detail in the ancient structure is very good. I like the tree coming through the top of the temple and how you composed it in the frame. I like the light and shadows in this as well. Very nice work Richard.

Kevin

Your capture and post work make for a great looking image, especially given the light range it seems you had to deal with.
Good work and nicely composed as well.
I think the WS shows off the temple a bit better although the sky in the original is more interesting.
Well, there you have it, a little give here/take there.
Either way, nice portrayal.
Thanks,
Wilt

Hi Richards,
Beautiful bw composition,congratulation.
Best regards,
Ralf

Just thought I would pop in and see how the high ISO is going Richard. Nicely composed and excellent in B&W. Some fine detail in both the tree and the stone work. I checked the workshops and offer another,
Dave

Gorgeous B/W treatment here Richard especially with the superb focus which I always find appealing together.
It's a natural looking scene with the branches and clouds up at the top. I like the darkness below personally and POV and composition is very well chosen.
Nice work.

Well done in strong sunlight. A weird mood is captured here. A feeling that lots of history and time has passed. Good to hide the sunniest part of the sky with the tree.
