Emperor Qin’s horses…

This picture is taken in the Chinese Terracotta Museum near Xi‘an. It is a chariot with four horse which were shown behind a glass wall, so to make a good picture was far from easy (I took about fifteen and chose this one as best). The terracotta army is most famous because it’s thousands of terracotta soldiers all with different faces! But these horses were also very impressive. The whole army is exposed in a huge hall in the (near) future I will post pictures from the army and soldiers itself. The terracotta army just discovered in 1974 by a farmer, who was drilling water well, is in fact a Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor. When visiting China go to see this very impressive museum. On September 16, 2006, a German student infiltrated a Terracotta Army exhibit and disguised himself as one of the soldiers. According to museum officials, his disguise was good enough to make it difficult for security to discern him among the statues. That naughty German Student!

I chose for this ‘poster way’ of showing this picture because they ‘earn’ more than a simple frame. It is more or less a tribute to all the people (from all over the world) who are busy with restoring all those thousand of figures. This is a tremendous challenge I can assure you!

The Terracotta Army (Traditional Chinese: Simplified Chinese: pinyin: bīng ma yong; literally "military servants") or Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses is a collection of 8,099 life-size terra cotta figures of warriors and horses located near the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor ; pinyin: qín shi huáng líng). The figures were discovered in 1974 near Xi'an, Shaanxi province.
The terracotta figures were buried with the first Emperor of Qin (Qin Shi Huang) in 210-209 BC. Consequently, they are also sometimes referred to as "Qin's Armies".
The Terracotta Army was discovered in March 1974 by local farmers drilling water well to the east of Mount Lishan. Mount Lishan is the name of the man-made necropolis of the First Emperor of the Qin Dynasty. This is also where the material to make the terracotta warriors was made, and found. Construction of this mausoleum began in 246 BC and is believed to have taken 700,000 workers and craftsmen 38 years to complete. Qin Shi Huang was interred inside the tomb complex upon his death in 210 BC.
8,099 figures have thus far been unearthed at the site. These figures include infantry, archers, and officers and are manufactured in a crouching or standing pose. Each figure was given a real weapon such as bronze spears, halberds or swords, or wooden crossbows with bronze fittings. The second pit contains about 1,400 figures of cavalry and infantry along with chariots. (Text from Wikipedia.com)

Hello Hans, we had a display of these soldiers etc at our Art Gallery a couple of years ago. And I found it so amazing. I took hours to go through it. But we weren't allowed cameras at all.
I can see the reflection of the chariot's cover in the glass, but apart from a little over-exposure you have done a good job here. Very well displayed as a poster, BRAVO!
Janice

Can see it is taken from behind glass.
Good description, Hans.
Jan

Hello Hans.
this composition is excellent. I like the POV, and angle it greates a lot of depth and gives this an 3D look. Very nice details and the great tones.
You choose a excellent frame to present your photo.

about 10 years ago, there was a touring exhibition, we saw it in Antwerp, we were enthralled but it must be very impressive to see the 'real thing' in it's context. Thanx for this, M, (*_*)!

wow..amazing story for one..and the photo came out awesome..love the subject as I love horses but the lighting etc is perfect..and good choice for the framing..you do this so very well..TFS

Hi Hans,

Another great poster shot, I really like your framing style.... Great composition (here you get to choose... :P) even thought you took it with the glass wall in between, it still good result, especially one of the stone horse is looking your way. I am looking at those people in the glass reflection, if they happen to dress like ancient Chinese then it will look like "ghost" hehehehe.... (kidding)
Thanks for sharing,

Cheers,
Sweety

Hi Hans

Hi Hans,
it's so amazing to see this old things - it was wonderful to be there.
It's a long time ago - 1991 - but I still remember so many impressive moments.
Thanks for bringing back nice memories with your shot, bye and have a nice sunday

Nice shot and vey informative note. The sculture in terracotta is very realistic.
I like the compo and light.

A well composed photo of a fascinating subject. I hope to go and see them for myself one day. I can appreciate the problems of shooting through glass, you've done well as I could not tell from the image.
I'm not usually into borders but you are right, the subject deserves one, and yours works really well.

Hi Hans, I think you have done really well in this photo in terms of getting the light to look great. If I recall the room that they are in is rather dark with striking light all dotted around, many chances for some bad lens flare. But you seem to have captured it very well and true!

Cheers

Steve

another postcard picture Hans...
nice colours and compo. the framing does the picture justice,

Hi Hans

I remember this place. Very good result, sans tripod. I gave up, due to the low light, crowds, reflections etc. I admire your perseverence!
