Emperor Qin’s Terracotta Army…

As promised in my note of the “Emperor Qin’s Army” hereby a compilation of four photo’s taken from the terracotta soldiers in the pits where they were found. The terracotta army is most famous because it’s thousands of terracotta soldiers all with different faces! The terracotta army just discovered in 1974 by a farmer, who was drilling water well, is in fact a Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor. When visiting China go to see this very impressive museum. It is more or less a tribute to all the people (from all over the world) who are busy with restoring all those thousand of figures. This is a tremendous challenge I can assure you!

Archaeology of the Terracotta Army

Archaeological excavations of the Terracotta Army are still ongoing over thirty years after its discovery. This is largely due to the fragile nature of the material and its difficult preservation. Terracotta is literally “baked earth” which is kiln fired at relatively low temperatures. After firing each figure, the Terracotta Army was coated with a lacquer finish to improve durability. Along with the soldiers and officers, chariots made with great detail and precision were also included as part of Qin Shi Huang’s army. The terracotta figures were found in three separate pits, with an empty fourth pit also discovered. It is believed that the largest pit, holding over 6,000 figures of infantrymen, chariots and horses, was representative of the First Emperor’s main army. The second pit contains about 1,400 figures of cavalry and infantry along with chariots. This segment is thought to represent a military guard since it is much smaller than the first. The third pit contains the command unit, comprised of high ranking officers, lesser officers, and a war chariot drawn by four horses. It is the smallest of the four and contains 68 figures within a 5,000 square foot area. The terracotta figures are life-like and life-sized. They vary in height, uniform and hairstyle in accordance with rank. The coloured lacquer finish, moulded faces and real weapons and armour used in manufacturing these figures creates a realistic appearance and stands as a testament to the amount of labour and skill involved in their construction. It is also proof of the incredible amount of power the First Emperor possessed to order such a monumental undertaking as the manufacturing of the Terracotta Army. (Text from Wikipedia.com)

These statues are amazing. They are so life-like and I believe each one has a different face too. THanks Hans for showing this to us, I was so impressed with the small display they brought out to NZ, so seeing this makes it even more better. Bravo!

Hi Hans,
Your photo remembered me a beautiful exhibition presented at Montreal in 1986, intitulated : "Chine Trésors et Splendeurs". I have seen there, the several soldiers of Emperor Qin's terracotta army exactly like in your photo. I have still the superb exhibition book. I was very impressed by the beauty of specimens and their great history.
Excellent and very representative montage. Good colors and details. Well framed! Bravo and thank you for sharing! Annie

Hi Hans,
a wonderful collage with interesting shots.
Every single is very good, I like it.
Such a great place, thanks for sharing it with us
Sabine - wishnugaruda

Nice montage of this amazing place, Hans. I am wondering however if the picture on the top right corner should not have been flipped so that the soldiers would be looking in the same direction as the one underneath. The two on the left have the soldiers looking in the same direction which is toward us. Nice close-up and good overall view. Well done!
