One of the most touching passages in Chinese literature is Lin Daiyu's lament as she sweeps up fallen leaves: she feels that her existence has no more significance than that of the leaves', and that her passing will receive just as little attention. If Lin were a noodle-maker's daughter, perhaps her lament would have also included a reference to fallen noodles under the drying racks.
