If an "intellectual" then he went thru hell! If the Red guard, he ran wild. He has his mao cap on. I do not know if he could tell you, maybe spies would get him in trouble! You cannot bad mouth the government.

This is great, and yes, it is mind-boggling to try to imagine all of the things this gentleman has experienced. It would be very interesting to spend some time over tea talking with him.
As for the photo, it's a real dilemma how to crop this--do you want to focus on the face or include a bit of the surroundings for context? I think I'd do what you did and go for a medium.
As far as the other comment about spies, I suppose if there was a spy hiding in one of those baskets, that would have made for an interesting shot. I've had many people tell me about their cultural revolution experiences, and it was hellish for everyone, not just the intellectuals.

Pierre,
This is a great photo of a wise older man who has seen and lived through many changes. I like the way you composed the photo. The light is good and enough detail to see the facial expression. Well done.
Regards,
Kevin

Erik

Hello Pierre, a sensitive portrait of the elderly man.
I like his smile and the way that he is looking at you.I think the composition is just fine.
A pity that you couldn't communicate, your title fits the shot nicely.
Tfs, regards Jean.

Bonjour Pierre! Bravo!

Hi Pierre..this shot turned out nicely...nicely composed shot of this interesting old man. It would be interesting to know about his life but not too many of us are able to communicate in that region of the world.
