roof corner in Forbidden City Beijing
Animal ornaments decorate the corners of roofs. The more animals the more important inhabitants of the building. the emperors' quarters paraded nine or more figures while the concubines had to settle for only three or four.
On the far left is a dragon and on the right an immortal rides a phoenix. |
