On our way out of Xinjiang, we took a train from Korla (Kuerle) to Zhangye, in Gansu. This was a 28-hour ride on regular seats. It was so much fun - and cheap - that we never went back to sleepers after that. The train was packed with all the regular Chinese folks, and there was always plenty to see, both in and out of the train.
This is a mother and daughter who were going all the way to Xi'an, roughly twice as far as we went! In spite of the enjoyment, it was nice to get of the train when we finally did, yet lots of other people were only halfway to their destinations.
