Tibetan prayer flags

The flags existed already thousands of years in Tibet, long before Buddhism developed there. The five colours symbolised the five elements ground, water, fire, air and space, which had be brought in assessment. To hang out the flag a horse was painted on it which, together with the wind, was the symbol of vital energy and prosperity of people. With feathers of the eagle or white liquid manure, which symbolised unbridled energy, these flags were placed at high places, such as roofs or mountain passes, where wind conducted the wishes up to heaven.


Tibetaanse gebedsvlaggen.

De gebedsvlaggen bestonden al duizenden jaren in Tibet, lang voordat het Boeddhisme daar tot ontwikkeling kwam. De vijf kleuren symboliseerden de vijf elementen aarde, water, vuur, lucht en ruimte, die in balans gebracht moesten worden. Op de vlaggen werd een paard geschilderd dat samen met de wind, het symbool was van vitale energie en voorspoed van de mens. Met veren van de adelaar of witte gier, die tomeloze energie symboliseerde, werden deze vlaggen op hoge plaatsen, zoals daken of bergpassen gehangen, waar de wind de wensen hemelwaarts voerde.
