Colours of China.....Orange

Today I start a series of colours in desaturated pictures with a striking coloured part in it. It’s a kind of an experiment and I’m looking forward to your comments. I’m starting in China and will continue with this type of picture with a series of approximately five images, planning the fifth and final posting as a number of total two hundred postings at TL, next week.

This picture is taken in Chengdu China, on a street market were many Chinese selling their merchandise, like vegetables, meat, fruit, underwear (unfortunately they didn’t sell my size) and everything needed for the Chinese family...This woman is arrange her fruit, a kind of orange, grapefruit or pomelo, I’m not for sure. [Is there a Kiwi who can help me out?]

PS-talk:
- desaturated the image
- selected the pomelo’s
- pasted into the B&W copy
- framed and add text

Pomelo

The pomelo (or Chinese grapefruit, pummelo, pommelo, jabong, or shaddock), Citrus maxima (Merr., Burm. f.), also Citrus grandis (L.), is a citrus fruit, usually a pale green to yellow when ripe, larger than a grapefruit, with sweet flesh and thick spongy rind.
The pomelo is native to Southeast Asia and all of Malaysia, and grows wild on river banks in Fiji, Tonga, and Hawaii. It may have been introduced into China around 100 B.C. It is also grown commercially elsewhere, particularly California, Florida, and Israel.

The pomelo is also known as a "shaddock," after an English sea captain, Captain Shaddock, who introduced the seed to the West Indies in the 17th century from the Malay Archipelago. In the Pacific and Asia, it is known as jabong and in Chinese it is called yòuzi (not to be confused with the yuzu, which uses the same kanji but is a different species), while it is called som o (ส้มโอ) in Thai, and buntan or banpeiyu in Japanese

The pulp colour ranges between clear pale yellow to pink to red, and tastes like a sweet, mild grapefruit. It is the largest citrus fruit, growing as large as 30 cm in diameter and weighing as much as 10 kg; the peel is thick, and is sometimes used to make marmalade. The grapefruit is a hybrid between the pomelo and the orange. In some markets, grapefruits or pomelo/grapefruit crosses will also be sold as "pomelo" or "pummelo."

The tangelo is a hybrid between the pomelo and the tangerine. It has a thicker skin than a tangerine and is less sweet. It can usually be found in grocery stores in the United States from the late fall until early spring and is sometimes thought of as a Christmas fruit. The peel of the pomelo is also used in Chinese cooking or candied. In general, citrus peel is often used in southern Chinese cuisine for flavouring, especially in sweet soup desserts. Prachtig resultaat.! Good job.!

Nice experiment - it works well, bringing out the colour of the fruit and of course drawing attention strongly towards it.

Hans,
I seem to always like selective color shots. Here the Pomelo's were the right choice. I clearly focus on those and what she is doing. Good work and superb notes. I'd like to try a Pomelo.....

Hi Hans

I really like the subject of this photo and I think the PP work really enhances it. I know some people are not fond of selective desaturisation but I think when it is done to highlight a point of interest in the photo it works really well. This one works really well

This is excellent work Hans, a terrific photo for this kind of work.. the oranges looking so bright, and appealing, looks like oranges to me.

I also like your frame/presentation.

Top marks to you.

Kindest regards
Dawn

Hi Hans,
Lovely shot, of an everyday street scene, giving it your special touch of color. Very good PP work, and the shot is very sharp and composition well balanced.

Very clever Hans. I like how you have brightened up the fruit.
Pomelos grow to 30cms and weigh 10 kilograms - no way!! What a size - I've not heard of them here in NZ.
The pomelo is an exotic large citrus fruit from Asia, that is an ancestor of the common grapefruit.

Alles met de fiets in China! Mooi

I really like how you popped the oranges in as color and everything else as BW here Hans! The oriental people are beautiful people and how lucky you are to photograph them!

Great daily life shot and I love the partial desaturation you've used - really giving the oranges a zing! Composition is superb. My only suggestion would be to simpliy the text in the border - two titles look a little cluttered.
Thanks for sharing
Mark

Superb PP work Hans. A well composed image to start with and the desaturation has worked well. Excellent focus on the young lady and well framed and presented. TFS,
David

Many thanks for your comment on ‘City Park VI’ and the comments on 10,000 :)

Kunstig en special Hannes! Mooi gedaan

Hello Hans!

Pretty neat application of the partial desaturation. One problem here, good POV to capture her with her baskets and oranges. But the worst position to get the tree directly behind her head. It seems it is growing out of her head. Fortunately, with Post processing , problem can be solved easily ( see WS ).

Be careful with this my friend ! When taking photo of people, we should first look at what we are shooting behind as well, instead of focusing on our sbject. Easier said than done, as I still do this mistake myself!

Have a great weekend !
Robert :)

Great image Hans, well spotted.
Good composition and PP work.
Regards Mark

erg mooi serie hans
Groet
Marco
