Smithsonian Institution
To start with something I like to share with you. Yesterday I received a e-mail via Adam, from the Smithsonian Institution, with the request if they may use one of my pictures which is showed here on TL!

This is what was written to me: [quote] “The exhibit, featuring a red sandalwood model of the Ten Thousand Springs Pavilion in the Imperial Garden of the Forbidden City, will open around April18 and close June 5. The model is a gift of the China Red Sandalwood. We would like to use the image as displayed on TrekLens called Yan Shou copyrighted copyright by Hans Spruijt.” [unquote]

Boy am I flattered! And I don’t have a clue why this picture, it’s not one of my best postings in my opinion. OK, let’s see how this will end...I’m very curious :)

Back to the posting of today:

Colours of China...Red

Here the second posting in the series “desaturation & colours”. Again taken in China, this time in Dali, a small town at the border of lake Erhai. At that particular day (my birthday April 23rd) the people from this county were celebrating the arrival of spring (spring festival) and I can assure you if Chinese celebrate something they due it with enthusiasm and all together....So it was quite busy on the market I can tell you. These women buying artificial flowers for their homes. In the WS posting you can see a colour photo of these people from the mountains, as they were named. The woman with the flower in her hands is not sure what this ‘white’ photographer was doing, till I explained I was the Green Baron from Holland. Suddenly her faces became a big smile :)

OK enough ‘nonsense talk’, please let me know what your opinion is about this posting. From the previous one I received very concrete and useful feedback!

In the WS you will find the full coloured version of this photo.

Preciosa imagen.

Groeten,
Niek

Excellent work my dear friend... i like the picture too but in this time i like the work that you make here... is excellent, congratulations... TFS...

Yan Shou - see what you mean - but still - the Smithsonian - an honour.
Since I'm totally addicted to color, I prefer the one you posted in WS, but without a doubt this one is more stylish and will draw one's attention more easily.
Point earned and you give us a follow-up about the S.

Hello again Hans.
Love the effect you seem to be mastering. Great black and white tones. The red flowers toyally jump out at you.

tfs

Hi Hans,

I like the use of localised colour to give a certain atmosphere to a picture and on the whole it works well here. Did you consider reducing the saturation of the colours in the planta little? as on my screen they seem very strong (although since upgrading to Windows Vista I've not been able to use my Spyder to calibrate my monitor Grrrr!!)

Like the eye contact the women holding the plant has with the camera/viewer.

Andrew

He Hans,

Wat een eer!
Toch weet ik niet of deze versie de best mogelijke is. Ik geloof dat iets meer sepia en gedemtere kleuren beter werken.

Nou succes met je Chinese expo.

Groet, Henk.

Hello Hans,
Very nice shot, the B&W works well and make the RED stand out more prominent.
Well done,
BEn

Hi Hans,
that's very impressive, only red flowers, the rest in black/white, I like the idea.
Also an interesting place, I love to see these ladies in her traditional dresses.
Thanks and greetings

Makes me think of the Robbie Burn's poem:
O, my love is like a red, red rose,
That is newly sprung in June.
O, my love is like the melody,
That is sweetly played in tune.

Another well done play on de-saturation and other clever tricks Hans. I'm going to try it one day...

And Congratulations on your Smithsonian interest too - BRAVO!

Hello Hans,
This is a very nice daily life scene with a nice partial desaturation which create an attractive focus point in the photo.

woooo... had ik deze toch bijna gemist!

Prachtig zoals de plant afsteekt tegen het zwart/wit.
Mooi plaatje; de vrouw op de voorgrond heeft zelfs aandacht voor de fotograaf! Echt heel leuk vastgelegd...

(vanaaf ga ik vroeg naar bed..... migraine!)

Groet,
Anneke

I hope you said yes (^_^) . Another fine use of the partial desaturation. I like speciallly how the lady is looking at us ( ^_^ ). Big Plus !

Well done !

Hullo from New Zealand Hans,
A beautiful photograph, it would look great in a National Geographic magazine. It could have been taken last year or fifty years ago, it's timeless!
Nice touch using monochrome with the colour accent.
Well done.
Peter.
