This fresh water pearl farm is in Suzhou, China. A very big area at the middle of a lake is fenced with nets and bamboo. At every four feet on center a bag made of net, with oysters that will culture the pearl, is dropped below the water. Every oysters will definitely have a pearl inside but the size of the pearl may vary. Tourist pay $5.00 and you are allowed to open one oyster. The pearl you find inside is yours to keep. If it is as big as your thumb you are lucky. If it is small, tough luck, but sometimes they let you get another oyster. Mostly the ladies are the ones who pay and go about opening the oysters. It was a cloudy day and rain was threathening. It was bad for picture taking, but the ladies had fun, shrieking and shouting everytime they find a pearl.
The picture was taken on June 14, 1998 with Canon EOS Rebel, and the print scanned in HP4570c. |

beautifully captured, i like the whiteness of the photo. balanced and very oriental feeling. nicely done!
Nice shot, great note. I would have liked to see some closer shots of the pearls too, though!
PS: Isn't Suzhou in Jiangsu province?
