OK, I'm posting an image I'm not all that happy with, so essentially looking for genuine criticism...

I think the idea of this shot is ok, the man studying his pet bird - but something doesn't seem right to me. Maybe it is the crop, I don't know.

This was taken when Jens/Headlessguy kindly gave me a tour of Kowloon. At this point I had screwed up and my ISO was at 1600...and shooting on aperture priority of f2.8 led to the 1/6400 shutter speed. Doh!

This was taken in the bird park at Mongkok - it seems to be split into two sections - one area for selling birds/cages/bird food and another where locals seem to take their birds for walks. The owners often hang their bird cages from trees or lampposts next to other caged birds while they have a chat with other owners. All seems a bit odd, but it is Hong Kong, so anything goes!

Shot in RAW, jpeg conversion, crop, lassoed the bird, converted the rest to b/w, some contrast fiddling and then Neatimaged.

Bardzo dobre ujęcie! Przemyślana kompozycja! Pozdrawiam I gratuluję Iza

I like the sharpness, but I see what you mean about the pic needing a better crop. My suggestion would be JUST the bird, the cage and his eyes, nose and mouth..I'll post WS...maybe it will flow..who knows??? The bird being of color works nice!
B-)

Hi Ricard,
I agree with you something is not OK with this photo. The idea is OK, but the fact that we cannot see the eyes of the man is bothering me. That one bar across his eyes is misforming his entire face. I think that a close crop and the seeing his eyes would do the trick.

Niek

Hi Richard, Thanks for showing us this photo, it makes us think..... so that is good!!

First thing I noticed was the cage distorting the face.. if that is the word to use..maybe if you had of stood side on to him showing him looking directly into the cage at his bird.. and pity about the noise.. but hey we all do that, and forget to change back a setting. I do like the bird being in colour so well done on that.

Maybe it is a good luck thing (chinese) to have a pet bird in a cage, and for them to be out "walking"...

Thanks for sharing.
Cheers
Dawn

Richard,
I am not bothered by this image as much as you are but I tend to agree with Niek, for some strange reason, I want to see the eyes on this guy. I think it's GREAT that you post a photo that your not happy with. It shows me (and TL in general) that you REALLY want to learn about photography. That impresses me. I guess what I am saying is: It's better than getting depressed, taking off your clothes( god, the mental visual alone might kill us), and posting a photo of yourself. I know that your not seeking a fan club...you want genuine help.
THAT'S the spirit of the site and why TL has been so great for all of us.
More about the photo:
I find the lines behind the man interesting, implying that he is caged also with fences....barriers. There are two sets behind him. That may be something subconsciously not allowing you to fully accept this photo.
Anyway, I like it, I am usually partial to a good selective color/B&W image.
Scott

this is an excellent street shot of daily life richard :)
the b/w is good for this

the shot would be perfect if the whole of the man's head is behind the cage...
but thats beyond your control, especially for a street photo

in this photo i see the man trapped...just like the caged bird he is studying...great irony in the composition :)

Hi Richard, i find this shot interesting in itself, the subject matter looking at his bird, his precious ones in a cage, is spot on. I am not so bothered by other technical details, i think the picture itself paints a thousand words. Great shot and moment.

I love the pose (his hands), the concentrated look, the "trapped" face.
I think i would have cropped it right under his arms and run it through the Neat Image slightly.
A very interesting image, thank you for posting it:)

Karina

well my point of view I happen to love the shot and the way it is cropped is perfect. his expression and body lingo adds to the shot as a whole. to be honest I wish I shot this... but i would have edit it different all the way around. i think the details come out in the wrong places. such as the details in the hair are stronger then the main focal point where you want to look but the hair keeps pulling you back to it.

then the arms are a perfect expression of calm non pose shot. but yet they look way to soft like the life fell out of them an that steals from the focal point as well.

wish I had the original version of this it would be a fun shot to work with :-)

it is a perfect capture and tells a great story on its own. these kind of shots are my fav and the kind i would hang on my wall :-)
