Macau is located in the southern part of China's Guangdong Province, on the tip of the peninsula formed by the Zhujiang (Pearl River) estuary on the east and the Xijiang (West River) on the west. Macau is situated sixty kilometers west of Hong Kong and 145 kilometers southwest of Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province. Macau has no arable land, pastures, forest, or woodland. Because of this deficiency, Macau's people traditionally have looked to the sea for their livelihood. Macau has a very dense urban environment. The Portuguese settled in Macau in 1553, the year they started establishing on-shore trading depots. An enduring symbol of Macau which is of Portuguese influence is the ruin of the façade of São Paulo (or, officially, Madre de Deos, Mother of God) Church, built in 1602.

This picture was taken in one of the city streets, very narrow, crowded but cleaner than Hongkong.

This was taken by a film camera, a Minolta, in September 1986, and the print scanned in HP4570c

Street scenes are always intruiging to me, how do people live, what kind of housing etc. A bit too much contrast for my taste, and the sky is overexposed in my opinion, but what an atmosphere.

Hi André,
I was in Macau in November 04. I liked very much the European atmosphere of the town, the mixing of ancient and modern, visited the Macau Tower.
Your shot shows very well this European-Asian melting-pot.
I like it very much.
Sylvie

I love this one, because of the "old style" contrast (1986)
it's just a simple great picture, as urban scences are so interesting..
