| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
The hutongs of Beijing are old collective neighborhoods in which most of the population lived until the mid-twentieth century. Mao destroyed hundreds of these communities in a rush to modernize the country after the 1949 Revolution. For some, it was a welcome relief. Many hutongs had no private bathroom facilities, kitchens and very little privacy. Sometimes 3 generations of a family lived within 2 rooms Today very few hutongs remain.
This nice lady lives in a hutong a few miles from the Forbidden City. She walks over a mile a day to complete her errands |
