Oh Dear, a Deer captured with a new tele.!
Excellent result, David en gefeliciteerd met jouw (hoeveelste ?) verjaardag.
Ja, eens per jaar moeten we er allemaal aan geloven. haha
Maarja, als je dan een prachtig speeltje krijg is het minder erg, toch ?

A deer for a dear :)
Great composition, David -- and posted directly downstairs from me in the gallery too.
For a first shot with a new lens this is very nice.
It is a touch soft because of the shallow dof. You could certainly have done with less speed, I think.
A good rule of thumb fro minimal speed to keep images sharp is to match the extension of the lens with the speed of the shutter to counter camera shake. With the lens extended to 200 mm, your minimum speed should be 1/200 second or faster; extended to 300 mm, your minimum speed should be 1/300 second or faster. So, in this case, you could have used a slightly slower speed and a longer dof for better overall sharpness.
As I said, for a first effort this is very good indeed, so full ;)

Happy (belated) birthday, David. That's a very nice gift you got, you should treasure the love of your life, man ;o)!
IS does needs some getting used to, but I like this result. Focus & sharpness are fine by me. The lens does "flatten" the subjects as, as Silke mentioned, the DoF will be shallow, especially at f/5. I'm surprised by the 1600 ISO, though. In fact, if you had shot this at 1/250 at 400 ISO, I think the result would have been even better because there would have been less noise in the full size file. Of course, downsizing does eliminate most of the noise so I don't see any of it in this shot.
Cool one.
