Good luck... this is the door of the second floor of a farmers house, the first floor is ok but the rest came down. The sign on the door is for good luck. They are sleeping under a piece of plastic in front of their farm. The only luck they had is that they (grandma, mom, dad and daughter) survived.

Hi David

I've been thinking about this earthquake today. A week after it happened, I know there will still be people alive trapped under rubble, hoping for rescue; sadly I also know that lives will be winking out as every hour passes. It is a terrible thing to know.

It is heartening to read a note like this, I know there will have been tales of joy amidst the sadness.

Hi David:
A very powerful story to go with the image...and it gives the idea of the powerful disater. Good photojournalism!
David

Yes, it's nice that some hopeful stories are beginning to emerge. Heard of one village that had been completely cut off for days--out of the thousand or so residents, only two died. This family really is lucky though, to know how their family members are doing.

Hi David,
A strong reminder of a very tragic event. Our thoughts are with the people in China who are affected by this event.

Hi David,

It really break my heart to see all this happening, especially in a country with one child policy, I only have a child, I can't imagine if I lost him, I can't said I feel the pain as much as they do, but I sure can related to it. It is really heart breaking, is a sad sad life for them, hope they have food and water and help soon. Is good to know that his family survived.

In the circumstances that seems like a LOT of luck then - to have survived - but then the struggle begins.
I know those good luck signs - and the red on the door is to keep evil spirits outside - in this situation that also stops to function - making them double afraid of what the future will bring.
Thanks for reporting David.

Take care
Els

hi David

Everyday on the tv watch of news coming from Sichuan, the powerful destruction and damages go beyond China and touch every heart that feels the tragedy. I am feeling a loss everytime I watch the news story. Your photo is a testament to sharing the grief.

Well, at least the first floor is still intact, so if it is found to be stable enough they don't have to rebuild the whole house, David...
Technically, I think the shot needs a bit of brightening; did you use spot metering on the door, or averaged metering?
Anyway, another good document for the disaster that has happened.
