Strobist Lighting 102 - Cooking Light

This is my entry for the Strobist Lighting 102 - Cooking Light assignment.

The brief for the assignment was (copy from strobist.com):
The assignment is to photograph one or more kitchen utensils - knives, forks, spoons, whisks - whatever you like. The look you are going or is that of ordinary object elevated to high art. Or at least commercial art, as this is the kind of thing that might appear as a catalog cover or in a calendar or on the wall of one of those ubiquitous "fast casual" restaurants.

I used one flash with blue gel above the knife and one flash with red gel left of camera. The highlight under the knife is from the specular reflection in the kitchen table. The magenta/purple colour is due to the red flash mixing with the blue reflection off of the kitchen table.
The knife is a white Kyocera Ceramic Knife. It's 100% ceramic and probably one of the best knifes I've ever used. Strongly recommended.

I've uploaded an alternative as a workshop. I think I like this one better but my wife likes the workshop posting.

I've setup a theme for the Strobist Lighting 102 assignments so if you choose to do any of them you are more than welcome to post to the theme.

If you are interested in using simple artificial lighting I strongly recommend reading the Strobist Blog.

Cheers,
Jens

te felicito por a idea original un gran trabajo

This is pretty incredible, Jens - I think you must be one of the most knowledgeable and innovative photographers on Treklens. I admire your talent and imagination and wish there were more like you here.

"The look you are going or is that of ordinary object elevated to high art". Mission accomplished, this is a lovely shot. The composition and lighting have produced a wonderful image. I really cannot speak highly enough of this and can find nothing i'd change. I love the colours/tones/hues/however you describe it. The balance/angle between the knife and shadow is great. Excellent post and accompanying note.

Sorry, a bit waffling here, but this is great.

Wow, this is incredible, im super jealous now, I really want to do the strobist assignments. Amazing!

Im so going to try using gels on my remote flashes now. Thank you!

This is very good Jens - excellent use of the gels over the flash heads, I gotta try this sometime.
Nice 'sharp' (if you'll pardon the pun) image.
Good work.
David

Sharpness, colours, shadows, reflexion,... All the elements have their importance. Well done ! (too bad I can't give more than 2 points !)
