Happy Valentines Day

I'm really not much for Valentines Day or any other event that evolves around people having to buy each other gifts (except birthdays and xmas). We never celebrated Fathers Day, Mothers Day, Valentines Day or any other gift giving day in my family. I don't see why you need a specific day to be nice to your loved once. You should be that all year round.
Anyways, I had this idea for a while and thought that this was an appropriate time to give it a go.

I used a Canon 430EX at 1/16 in a softbox above and a Vivitar DF400MZ at 1/16 in a softbox camera left.
I tried to set the light from above in a way that would feather the light to accentuate the fall off. This is done by directing the light away from the subject so that only the edge of the light falls on the subject.

For pp I did colour correction and added a soft blur and a vignetting.

This is how I do vignetting in Photoshop:
1. Duplicate the original layer
2. Change blend mode to Multiply
3. Use the circular marque to select the area of interest (the area where you don't want the vignetting)
4. Feather the selection by 50px (50px works pretty good for TL size photos)
5. Inverse the selection.
6. Click the layer mask icon on your layers palette
7. Adjust the opacity of the vignetting layer to your liking
Voila!

Cheers,
Jens

hello Jens
how are you doing?
this is a wonderful portrait
beautifuy focused, fine lighting and good expressions on her face. though i personaly dont like the soft faces but here it works very well.
i like the mood of the frame and the freshness of roses adds a beauty to this work.
have a wonderful Valentine's day.

Hi Jens,
Excellent capture, like the pose of the woman (your wife?)the pose is very sensitive. Great soft tone, excellent colours. You did a fine job here!
Hans

A lovely intimate shot with superb focus on your subject, the smile and the closed eyes combined with the tight framing really draw the viewer in. The rich, contrasty feel of the shot works well with the bold colours of the flowers.
Nicely done

Hi Jens,

Very nice soft shot. I like the effect you have achieved. I think it is nice that her eyes are closed as she is enjoying the scent of the flowers. Dark background is nice as it accentuates the beautiful red flowers.

Enjoy your day! Lisa
