[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Lemon Pansy Junonia lemonias is a common nymphalid butterfly found in South Asia. It is found in gardens, fallow land, and open wooded areas.

It is brown with numerous eye-spots as well as black and lemon-yellow spots and lines on the upperside of the wings. The underside is a dull brown, with a number of wavy lines and spots in varying shades of brown and black. There is also an eyespot on the lower side of the forewing. The wet and dry season forms differ considerably in coloration and even shape. In the wet season form the markings are distinct and vivid and the wing shape is a little more rounded.

In the dry season form the markings are obscure and pale especially on the underside and the wing margin is more angular and jagged. This helps it camouflage in the dried leaf-litter.

It is the most common of the six Pansies in India. It is a very bold butterfly with strong territorial and aggressive behaviour but not as much as the Peacock Pansy. It flies quickly and strongly but with less fluttering of wings. It generally rests on the ground but not so frequently as the other Pansies and visits damp patches more often than the others of the genus. Like the Chocolate Pansy, it is more abundant in forests and distributed throughout South and Central India, upto South Gujrat in the west and West Bengal in the east. In The Himalayas, it can be seen upto 2700m from Kashmir Upto Assam. Besides Aztec Marigold, it visits flowers of Lantana, Bachelor's Button, Lindley Butterflybush, Ceylon Carissa, Coreopsis tinctoria, etc.

The Lemon pansy is a very active butterfly and can be seen basking with its wings open facing the sun. It sits very low to the ground and can be approached easily. It feeds with its wings half open. It is a fairly strong flier and flies close to the ground with rapid wingbeats and often returns to settle back in the same spots.

What a great note, Pankaj! Also a great photo, nice balance, softly blurred bg. TFS

Nice colours, good composition and sharp details in the top half of the butterfly (lower half seems a little out of focus, but not a major issue).
Thanks for sharing
Mark

Hi Pankaj,

What a glorious capture of this butterfly. The powdery wing has terrific texture and colors. The diagonal positioning of the butterfly in the frame is good. Sharpness is top-notch. Wonderful work. Regards. Danilo
