| This preist demeanded I give him money, and still no entry! He waved a stick at me, while I was taking off my shoes. The government tour guide said I could go into the courtyard, but not into the Gundicha Temple, yesterday. The preist wanted me to pay for marigolds he had in the pan. The sign said you can make a donation, NOT you must. He will not let me in, even if I donate. He allows no non-Hindus in. I left. I have gone on 2 tours, and not been allowed in a single temple in Orissa, or even the courtyard. Todays guide said it is the locals who decided this. I have gone to the famous 11 century Jaggernath temple also, and cannot even get into the courtyard. I think this is very bad for people who want to understand the Hindu religion. I have been inside many Hindu temples in other places. I always leave feeling very happy and peaceful, I cannot explain it. Except for the Sun temple which is being ruined by "restoration" work, no Orissa temple allows non-Hindus even into the courtyard so far. (Sun temple costs $6.50 for foreigners, 50 cents for locals). The rules for this temple are on the sign in front. It is the temple that helps celebrate the famous chariot festival each year, with the Jaggernath temple. Even though a sign refuses non-hindus to be inside temples in other places in India, the preists often let in foreigners, (at least into the courtyard). |
