| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
| I arrived from Madurai on a night bus to Trivandrum. The rickshaw drivers have banded together to over charge, and will prevent anyone honest from interfering with their plan. They followed me for 1 and 1/2 hours, up the street, across the street, and down the street, calling me names, laughing, demanding 800-1000 rupees. I previously paid only 100 rupees at the most. My bags are too heavy for me to carry very far. They followed me up and down the street, chasing away every honest rickshaw driver that stopped. This is very bad in Kerala, and much of India now. The government needs to put a stop to it. I finally took a government bus to Varkala Beach. The bus driver also wanted extra money, but that is another story, for another day. Tourists beware! More at http://www.geocities.com/thegood_badandugly. Not one government agency has responded to my complaint. |

you're COMPLETELY correct! it's a crisis here in south india (i'm not too familiar with the north, although i've found mumbai to be very straightforward and upfront with nominal charges)... i live in chennai, and here people charge 20 rupees to take you even 500 meters away (minimum charge)... the only way to manage anything is to be rude with them, preferably in the native tongue, but i suppose that's not a luxury many people here can afford. single men arguing with the drivers provoke an argument that might escalate, single women just get stared at and maybe teased inappropriately...
good portrait of the evil intention in this person's eyes... i'll try to get some more shots of these crooks in khaki for TL
thanks for sharing!

gloria,
nice catch of this cunning auto rickshaw driver.
it is sad but a fact specially in south india(if you don't know the dialect), i fell for it twice while visiting chennai, i guess things havn't changed much. and it will only get worse without govt. interference.
hope you are taking care.

Hi Gloria,
I certainly do agree with your note. The rickshaw driver in southern india are most horrible to handle. Not only foreigners but every person from an outside state gets the harassment..and it is even worse if you happen to go to chennai..
I agree...the ricshaw drivers do over charge! but i havent found the ricshaw drivers up here in Delhi any different!
