The Trivandrum government bus conductor charged everyone on the bus, but me, 24.5 rupees. He told me 45 rupees. I said no, I will pay what everyone else pays. He yelled I had to pay 45, or he will take me to jail. I refused.
The blurred Indian man behind me started screaming "I think I am special. Tourists get everything cheaper than Indians. I should go back to the USA". He screamed at me non stop. I pay so many times more than any Indian pays for anything always. He screamed that I want to ride free, and that was not true.
The govenment bus driver drove to the large police station in Trivandrum, where he and the driver exited. An entire bus full of people sat and waited, while he demanded the police arrest me. The conductor was smiling. He wanted me put in jail.
The Indian was yelling in the bus, still at the police station. His wife is hiding. She keeps trying to shut him up. He is screaming "I am afraid of him. If I take his picture he will break my camera. He is also yelling go ahead and take his picture". The police come out and stare at me. I am humilated. The conductor and driver get into the bus, and drive off. I am charged 24.5 rupees. I receive my proper change back. Life goes on.

Hi gloria

A sad fact of life in many parts of Asia. Where possible, I try to buy tickets direct at a bus/train station, where there is less chance of arbitrary price gouging.

interesting notes...do you travel alone ? you got gut. interesting photo, one pic, many human expressions..

Your picture and your note make together a great (yet scary) documentary. Very well done.

I see how life is tough there, why stay and visit, I guess they do not want tourists.

Marie-Lise

A very interesting capture of daily life in transport, people seem to be afraid of your camera !!!
You experimented an unexpected story but what interests me most is the quality of your capture. It tells a story by himself without words.
A photo tells a story that doesn't need any word. A photographer expresses itself with images, that's the eye that speaks.
You succeeded here.
Well done !
Sylvie

Hi Gloria,
I am so sorry to hear that it happend to you. I agree there are some people who want to make extra money form tourists. And I am so much worried that it happend in my state. I am sorry for that.
This is a nice picture you could manage to take inside the bus.
Regards,
Oam.
