I really was attracted by the natural color tones of this one. Does it look anything like LOTR (Lord of the Rings) scenery? At 3600 feet ASL at the Kalimantan View Point, I found this Jungle lady with extra long hair, a bastket by her side, sitting by the edge of the cliff looking down at the valley that I shot yesterday during a nature study trip. The background here is the same as yesterday's post of the valley and mountains with fog and clouds. I was experimenting with heavy lens handheld, the group did not allow time for me to use tripod.

I was looking down the steep cliff and noticed this tree stump of dark color tone, and a type of fern leaf growing on the tip. Stetching full 500mmFL and trying my best to stablise the lens at only 1/40s, you can say I had a little shaky hand holding 2.2kg weight. The mix of dark burnt color and wood tone, with a leaf of green, and this fern of softness and color prompted me to take 3 shots. I would not call this macro shot because of 500mmFL limit, the sharpness is purely my fault. I brought the lens but my team mate decided to skip bird shooting and went to this Jungle Walk. So I had to carry heavy 50-500mm lens all the way for 2hr hike trail. If I had time on my own, I would wait for light condition changes and shoot more landscape at this altitude of the jungle and mountains.

Hello Bill.
Nice colourful picture but with a lack of sharpness.
How come ?
Best wishes from Jan

colours are undoubtly beautiful here, Bill, especially the BG. it's so lovely soft!
but the fern shoot i think is a bit OE or perhaps my ageing eyes fail me.
woaaa...another jungle trekking eh!

Hi Bill,

It's amazing to see this plant grows on another tree . .
Very well captured with blurred BG . .
Great shot my friend . .

Tfs,
Tjutjut

Possibly interesting subject, but very blurred - although I understand the reasons for it.. Not anywhere near your usual standard Bill... I really think we should be posting the best and not something that you'd usually delete..
On the plus side the lighting is very nicely diffused, I guess from the jungle cover..

Maybe you could consider using a backpack as support - or even a cheap monopod, usually very light to carry around and extremely helpful..

Regards
David

Hello Bill,
Such delicate and graceful frond ready to unfurl. Pity there was not enough time for the tripod, the focus appears to be on the foliage to the right. Nonetheless an exqusite image from atop close to heaven. My compliments...Danilo

Hi Bill,

That equipment would be too heavy for me, although it is worth having it, instead of a pocket camera.
Nature is indeed beautiful en the colour of your BG works wonderful here.
My goodness full 500 mm and not even using at least 1/500 - steady hands you must have!

merhaba dear Bill...
verynice shot and pov...superb colors and focus..bravo..selamlar....

Hi Bill

Ah well, here goes ... kudos to you, first of all, for going to all the trouble to GET to this location. A lot of effort but worth it for the views I hope?

But - as you admit, this is a shaky shot and the lack of sharpness turns an "ohhh!" into an "awwww."

May I ask - you have a good camera, why didn't you increase the ISO when your shutter speed showed as being 1/40s? At ISO 400 you would've had good, quick shutter and a sharper shot that, even if noisy, would be easily fixed with a little NR.

The alternative (and something I often do) would be to stop down the shutter speed a little so that you get a darker, but sharper shot that can then be lifted in PP later. :)

Anyway, a very useful shot in terms of what it can teach us - thank you for sharing it.
