Taken within a dormant volcano, in central Bali. The rim of the volcano in the background, is shrouded in fog. The people of Bali are mostly Hindu, & the temples represent Mt Meru. This one has 11 tiers.

The following story is connected with the tiers at Mengwi, a similar temple, also with 11 tiers:

A long time ago, when a king of Majapahit in East Java died, he was cremated and his ashes were carried by 54 men towards the sea in a bamboo tower (bukur) with a tiered roof. The tower was placed on a little boat (kapal), on which were seated the 54 followers (patih) of the deceased and three leaders (makel). The boat, however, was stranded at sea.
This episode has been transposed to the temple and is symbolized in the stone tower at the center and in the pedestals with the 54 and 3 stone seats. The tower is in fact, a replica of the bamboo cremation structure. Close to it, to the south, is a shrine with an 11-tiered roof, called little garden with a pond” (taman). During the temple festival on Tumpek Kuningan, its ‘water’ is used to bathe the god of the tower. This is very convenient, because then a long tour outside the temple to a bathing place is not necessary.
Replicas of mountains which are important for south Bali (Agung, Batur Batukaru) are found in shrines in the north and the east of the inner court. They are always provided with tiered roofs, meru. The number of tiers should be odd, the. highest being 11, which of course is only suitable for the most important peak. In this case it represents Mt Agung.
The main purpose of placing a replica of a mountain or lake in a temple is to save the time and effort needed to actually visit them. This is necessary if one needs holy water for a ritual.

This looks as peaceful and idyllic as your other shots. Lovely colours. Maybe a slight off centre would be good but if I were you I would have no idea as to what to crop and what to keep :( Still deserves a smiley :)

Great shot christ! Even though it's a bit blur but the photo is really nice. I particularly like the mountain view shrouded in fog. Good POV.

Sorry christ, I've used up all my points for the day.

What a beautiful place Chris, brilliantly captured here. I don't usually like to see central themes, but it really works here and its nice to break the rules. Amazing colours and marvellous composition. A cracker.

Tree week ago I was there. Believe me its is changed. But on your photo is its more beautiful than now. Only early in the morning you will see the volcano.

Take it out off the centre Chris! This is a very lovely one... U make me feel an idiot not visiting such places :( But, hey! I am noting them down... Maybe sometime... What say? :) The mountain stands good... :) Thanks for sharing :) I love your clicks... Whats the next surprise ;)

Take care...
- Hima.

It's very nice! I enjoy how it's capture. I would like a little more to the left cause the embarcation look nice too! Is the number of tiers have a particular sence? It's wonderfull!

very nice chris :)
beautiful place for photos, the buildings look like CG creactions :) very cool effect from an old film

This is well seen and very well captured. That bit of noise doesn't matter with such mood created by this capture. I like this one.

Interesting shot! Before I open the thumbnail,I thought I was seeing some big firs! What was my surprise to see that those firs were in fact some kind of original houses or temples! I am fascinated by the oriental architecture! So strange and unique compare to ours! The photo is well composed! The photo is spectacular! TFS! Michel

Hi Chris,
Lovely scene. Looks and feels like something out of a eastern legend. Fantastic colours.

Nice shot, Chris! The light is simply beautiful. The grain also helps to create a moody atmosphere. Great job!

Very nicely done, Chris! You present this interesting architecture very well and it makes us want to go there to discover it by ourselves. The mountains in the background adds a nice dimension to the picture. Your note is extremelly informative as well. Well done!
