The 1st anniversary of the Boxing Day tsunami, in which 250,000 to 300,000 people perished around the Indian Ocean. Nias Island (off the coast of Sumatra), was just one of many places hard hit, with 8 metre plus waves. There are several people on the beach in the distance, to give an idea of scale. I felt uncomfortable walking on this beach, with so many coconuts suspended like a 'Democales sword' above me. Nias had an 8.7 magnitude earthquake, in March 2005, in which several hundred more people died.

March 2005 earthquake

Lyrics to the bitter-sweet song 'Porcelain', which matched the mood here (Copyright: Moby, from the album 'Play' 1999):-

"In my dreams I'm dying all the time
Then I wake its kaleidoscopic mind
I never meant to hurt you
I never meant to lie
So this is goodbye
This is goodbye

Tell the truth you never wanted me
Tell me...

In my dreams I'm jealous all the time
Then I wake I'm going out of my mind
Going out of my mind."

beautiful shot of a great landscape and a useful note about the tsunami last year... TFS Chris

An amazing shot and its indeed sad what nature can do ...but we rarely stop to think how much we are in fact interfering with Nature.
A vey good picture and am glad you have a beautiful memory of the place which bore the terrible fury of Nature which was its very source of beauty. TFS

Such an idyllic location.
Tragedy such as this strikes anywhere at any time and there is no prevention and very little cure but time.
I understand the caution - those cocnuts would reach a terminal speed of Mach 3 before hitting the deck from that height.
Thank you for the anniversary dedication.

Hi Chris,
your shots are made of my dreams.
I've also been to some places you show us - as we already talked about with Hua Hin. Sumatra is also a wonderful place to be, special the lake Toba. Have you also been to Java - Borobudur - it's marvelous.
This shot here is so romantic - I wish I could be there now. ;-)
Bye bye and thanks

I would suggest a motorcycle helmet and nerves of steel (-:

Nice capture of the idyllic tropical beach. I think the sand is a touch overexposed, and the shadow level needs bringing up a bit. Minor details which are irrelevant to the composition.

very strong picture this considering the upheavals in the earths crust can change this in a few hours
TFS

Great photo Chris, as usual, and a strong reminder of what took place around this time last year. Thanks.

A fine reminder of the immense tragedy. People too often underestimate the Sea!!! I grew up with and respect her! Great comp again, it shows us the SPACE, thanx, M, (*_*)

The people on the beach provide a sense of the impressive scale of the palm trees. A coconut on your head from that height looks like it could be lethal.

Thank you for your sober note of remembrance too.
Best wishes...Paul

Chris, such sad memories of this time last year. I love the coconut palms, but yes, it would be dangerous walking below them!!
I wonder what this place would be like right now and how many trees are still there.
Thanks Chris for sharing...
Janice

A beautiful mix of blues and greens my favourite colours. The beach is just perfect, but nature can wreak havoc on such beauty. It is so sad to think of so many people losing their lives in the dreadful tsunami a year ago, and parents losing children, and children wandering about looking for their parents as I saw on the news tonight. Thanks for showing us the beach as it was many years ago.

What a trees. And piecefull beach now!
Ruud

Chris, A marvelous eyes catching shot is this. Fantastic green beside a wonderful composition. You really did it perfect. Congratulations.

Hi Chris,
Great title (you have all the reason) and picture.
Great tribute too.
José

How true. It looks like paradise but it can turn into a nightmare in a second. Massive beautiful trees. Great photo.

I fear coconuts, a few have landed near me already..... but I fear the ocean even more now! I am at a beach now, but uncomfortable. Cyclones which come here every year, at this time.....
