ASAKUSA KANNON TEMPLE
This picture was taken in the grounds of Asakusa Kannon Temple, inside the main gate. Sensoji (also known as Asakusa Kannon Temple) is a temple located in Asakusa, a central part of the Shitamachi. Shitamachi (or "downtown") is the old town of Tokyo.
The legend says that in the year 628, two brothers fished a statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, out of the Sumida river, and even though they put the statue back into the river, it always returned to them. Consequently, Sensoji was built there for the goddess of Kannon. The temple was completed in 645, making it Tokyo's oldest temple.
The woman in the picture feeding the pigeons is my wife Elizabeth. This was taken in 1987, so she is 18 years older now. At that time all I know about photography is ?focus on the subject and click?. I find this as a nice picture so I uploaded it.
This was taken by a film camera, a Minolta, in August1987, and the print scanned in HP4570c. |
