Buffalo Boy

While hiking through the mountains of Laos I encountered the Buffalo Boy. Although buffalos can be mean the Big Black ‘B’ recognized apparently similarity between him and the Big Green 'B', he stayed rather cool anyway. While shooting some pictures I went lower and lower with my camera so far till I was sitting on my butt making shots from a low POV.

You can see at the boy’s face he is not sure about the behaviour of this stranger and his camera. The buffalo is chewing his straw as if it is totaly normal to have a stuffed body with a soaked sweated shirt on and a silly hat on just below his head….

Took several shots and this one turned out as reasonable for TL in my opinion, but I like to know what yours is. Any way, I realize the boy’s face could be sharper, but I had to use a relative small F-stop (f/5.6) and wished I had decreased the shutter speed (1/90) two more stops. Well regarding the PP-work, add some green from the hills with the clone tool to get rid of a still partly visible blurred sky. Further more a slight increasing of brightness and contrast. Same foot=r the saturation which I increased with 15 units.

Tell me your opinion….

Hello Hans...
I'm not sure which expression I like more.. the Buffalo or the Boy! Very interesting capture.. Nice details and thanks for explaining how you would have re-taken this shot if you had the chance!

Hi Hans
I like your photo
very interesting and has good composition.

I think it tells a good story. Love the buffalo's expression - doesn't it look shocked with eyes bulging out! Excellent POV and in fact I prefer hazed out boy's face... the picture is of buffalo if you really ask me. Great shot... TFS

Hello Hans,
You really got the buffalo wandering and i like the moment you captured,TFS, bye.

Hi Hans,

it's impressive to see a little boy over this huge buffalo! You chose the best POV to highlight this difference

Very well done!

Gio

hi hans,

perfect shot of the boy on the buffalo. the nose very sharp and a bit blurred boy in the background. like the blurred part because it brings the attentionto the buffalo.

regards frans

incredible photo;)
great shot

Hi Hans
great study of daily life, like the low pov, as you say the look on the boys face says it all.
Have a great day
Gil

Hello Hans,
very brave boy, grat shoot, inetersting idea and excellent realization!

Regards

Igor

Hi Hans,
very nice work. I like the results. The blur on boy's face isn't that disturbing, for the scene is made by expression of bull's face and the mentioned blur matches the way we see with our eyes. So I don't think the face should be sharp.... Good pp work with the sky - though I tried, I didn't find the cloned spots... *s* As of composition: I like this tight crop with centrally placed bull - it overhelms the viewer and makes the photo stronger giving impression of direct contact with the animal and the boy. tfs

Hello Hansie

WOW this is a stunner,, the first think that I note here is your very brave position to shoot this image.. you must have been close to laying on the floor. No wonder they are both looking at you so strangely.

Superb sharpness and detail with a lovely POV

Well done on this one Hansie I love it

TFS regards Smurfie

From the looks on both their "faces" one can actually tell the buffalo enjoys this ride more than the boy! hhahahaahha in a way a humorous picture Hans.

Very nice view (composition), great light and atmosphere.

cheers,
Anneke

hello hans!
wonderful shot, and great perspective, i like it.

Master piece, Hans !
Wow, what a very good shot this is.
Perfect sharp and both the expression of the Buffalo and the young rider are gorgeous.
Think they both have never seen a camera (or a Dutchman) that close. haha
Top shot.!

Hallo Hans,
Mooie plaat hoor.

Hi Hans,
What a fantastic shot! Excellent low POV enhancing the stupor and astonishment expressions of the boy and the buffalo. Impressive! Excellent tight crop and presentation! Bravo! Annie

You are your own worst critic, Hans! This pic is absolutely wonderful! What I see as the main subject, which is well within the dof, is the look in the face of the buffalo. The human eye cannot focus on two different things at the same time, nor should the camera, if a sense of reality (and perception of depth) is what you are shooting for.
Excellent work!
Cheers
Otto
PS: I wrote this first and later found that most agree with me......

Hi Hans,
groeten,
Joop!

Hoi Hansie,

Prachtplaat man!

Mooi gedaan,
Groet,
Ruut

Hello Hans,
Would you believe I used to own a water buffalo when I was growing up in the Philippines - that was before our family migrated to the US. My grandfather gave it to me as a present, and I have always considered the animal to be one of the smartest. This image is so wholesome. The shy boy looks like he cares much for the animal. Best regards, Danilo

magnifique portrait

Hi Hans,
imposant picture
Karl

Hi Hans,

The intense, focused expression of both the boy and the buffalo made this photo a great shot.

Best regards,
Ramdan

Greay shot and good concept.
Fabulous Réal.

Hoi Hans,

Heel mooi.

Merhaba myfriend Dear HANS...
Verynice comp..and shot...Very interesting capture...selamlar

Hi Hans,
This is really impressive! I had never seen a human on a buffalo. The boy's expression is, in fact, that of "wondering". The buffalo's, in my POV, seems to me as if it's "thinking", "Don't you dare try anything smart, or else...".
Oh! this is really a very special posting!!

I really do like the depth of field, point of view and focus point on this one, Hans - a very good shot indeed, something a little different and possibly my favourite from your series so far.

I think b/w may have worked as well?

Lovely shot, well done!

Hello Hans,
Great composition and excellent expression.
Well done my friend.TFS.

Wow, Hans!
TFS & groeten,
Erik

Woah! I didn't saw that before! Buffallo i imagine them more in corrida or other events, but i never saw that calm enough to do that! it is impressive! I enjoy the expression! For sure if he decide to pass, you will move yourself :)

Hello Hans, my favorite so far!! Great POV & love the expression on the boy & buffalo as they seem to say "What is that"! I like this one with the just slightly, boy out of focus! For me it draws my attention to the buffalo first & then the boy. I saw a lot of these in Thailand & all seemed gentle even though they looked fierce. :} Don

Hi Hans
Great note and very fine photo, nice POV and comp. That's a tuff boy sitting on that one..

Well Mr. Barron, you asked for it. I think this is just an awesome image. It is so original and unique. I have visited it many times to enjoy it. The look on both the animals face and the little boys, are just priceless and clear. There is no doubt as to what either are thinking. So... great presentation, colour, detail and amazing composition and POV. Regards
Wanda

Hi Hans. I likethis POV a lot, the two faces in harmony. The beast of burdenand tiny master! Good clarity especially the animals face. TFS. Murray.

Geweldige foto
Ruud

geweldig Hans..

Jan

Super mooie foto, Hans!
