Hi Folks,

In THIS month a year ago, I joined this wonderful site on the introduction and invitation by my good friend Ramdan. Throughout the period I found this site is THE SITE for me to learn more about photography.

Through your critiques and comments – encouraging and otherwise – and observations on your postings, I picked useful bits to improve my techniques and knowledge in this interesting hobby.

My shots and works today are still far from perfect but viewing my debut posting really makes me smile, not because I am satisfied with where I am now but because of what a snap shooter I was.

Thanks so much for your support and encouragement, Folks.

And the learning continues…....

About this image:

Heliconia is a genus of about 100 to 200 species of flowering plants native to the tropical Americas and the Pacific Ocean islands west to Indonesia. It is the sole genus of family Heliconiaceae, but was formerly included in the family Musaceae.

Common names for the genus include lobster-claw, wild plantain and false bird-of-paradise. The last term refers to their close similarity to the bird-of-paradise flowers (Strelitzia).

The leaves are 15-300 cm long , oblong, growing opposite one another on non-woody petioles often longer than the leaf, often forming large clumps with age.

Their flowers are produced on long, erect or drooping panicles, and consist of brightly colored waxy bracts, with small true flowers peeping out from the bracts.

The growth habit of heliconias is similar to Canna, Strelitzia, and bananas, to which they are related.

Heliconias are an important food source for forest hummingbirds, especially the hermits some of which, such as the Rufous-breasted Hermit, also use the plant for nesting. The Honduran white bat also lives in tents it makes from the plant's leaves. (from wikipedia)

Thanking you in advance for viewing and your kind words.

Firstly congratulations on the first year anniversary. A nice shot to mark the occasion - simple subject matter but very striking, with vibrant colours and sharp details. Personally I'd have been tempted to clone out the leaf in the bottom right as it's a little distracting and doesn't add to the picture, but that's a minor niggle.
Thanks for sharing
Mark
