The orange color of ferry front looks like a helping hand unfolding out to offer assistance to people who need it. In this world, we all need a helping hand every now and then, big or small way. About 1.5 hour away from Kuching, an orange ferry crosses the 1-km wide Batang Sadong, taking villagers home to the other side of river. Without the ferry, it would take 4 hours drive of detour. Therefore, the ferry service is considered a helping hand to these poor rural people.

Sarawak is a land that has poor infrastructure facilities and rural people have to endure lack of services partly due to sparse population and remote access. To link up villages, towns and urban centres are not easy due to rivers, soft grounds and economically not viable infrastructure development incurring high costs. So it may take 30 years or 1 generation to see a bridge built here to replace this ferry. I was experimenting with my D700 sensor and bigma lens. The late afternoon light was still good, so normal iso200 was used here. I upload daily because Lunar New Year I may be offline for a while. I can bet every Dutch will be excited about this color, if you know why!

Hi Bill,
This I would call almost an ISO picture. Oustanding contrast. Due the vivid red levers of the boat an striking detail. Sharpness is spot on! Important and interesting note too.

Hi Bill

The red colour immediately jumps out here. Good symmetry between the 2 'arms' of the vehicular ferry, with superb sharpness. Tfs!

Hi Bill,
At first I thought the photo was not thát interesting. But everytime when I looked in the TL-gallery I saw that great redcolour! So I looked at the photo. The red-orange colour was more brilliant that I thought. The glow, the colour, the contrast and the reflection makes the photo more interesting!

So now I think your photo of the part of this ferry is good! Just because the special colours, the glow, the contrast and the reflections.

Thank you for sharing!

Janneke

Hi Bill.
A good lesson in how to make an interesting, intriguing and striking picture from such a mundane 'thing'. It looks like a monster hand or the jaws of an orange crocodile. The colour is fantastic, and the composition very well done. Very pleasing gleam on the water's surface, too.
Well done.
Regards,
Andrew

I like this Bill - it really stood out from the thumbnails - nice bright pop of color against the grey water. Good reflection, good composition.

hi Bill,
Very beautiful red colors rendering!
Against the cold gray water, its intensity is striking!
Vibrant! bravo! Annie

Hello Bill, the orange is so eye catching.
Are you becoming a minimalist?
I like the composition with the focus on the platform, chains and 'arms' of the ferry.
The grey water is a good bg.
Thanks for the interesting notes.
Regards Jean.

Great idea Bill, I like how you placed the ferry in the shot.
The little extenders of the very tip really make it for me.
Well seen and superbly captured image.

Hi Bill,

exceptional photo to accompany the meaning this ferry has for poor rural people.
The title is superb as it gets to the point immediately and delivers the message in most sophisticated yet direct way.
Light was very kind to you providing such warm ambient of gentle silverish water surface and red (cross) helping hand. They create wonderful photo ful of symbolic elements that place it on higher level.

regards,
jeri

HI Bill
I am guessing its either a take off or a landing, as its not something we would see here. The loading gates are closed before they are allowed to sail off.
Its most unusual but a real good shot.
Dot

Looks a bit like a sea monster, Bill. :O) I haven't been around these ferry boats for quite a while. It's interesting to remember that feeling of the sea and salt air. Guess I need to take a ride on the ferry soon.

I just read your caption. That's very moving what you say about under privileged people. So maybe it's a nice monster. :O)

Keep shootin'

Richard

Hi Bill,

Hello Bill,
I do like the isolation of the ferry. Indeed it looks like a helping hand. The inclusion of passengers or workers provide a nice personal touch. This is well composed and exposed. My compliments...Danilo

Hi Bill,
I must tell you that youre very good in observing and getting inferences. you must be from Science stream, though I dont know your job, it got to be mathematical..maybe engineer or so. Your guesses of my photo are almost right.
Nice shot of this attractive coloured ferry front. Well composed with the blue sea as BG. Look so captivating and interesting.

Foozi

Hi Bill,

Been a while and I can see the diversity of new shots in your gallery. Amazing work captured by the full frame pro. I can see that you are working for another D3x maybe in your bag. Cleverly seen and captured with such fine details. The contrast and reflection and the framing are flawless.

Have a nice weekend and best regards.

Hi bILL
wonderful red-orange contrast with the sea colour
great composition and really sharp
good work

It took me a while but I can see the reference in your title now. :)

I like the clarity and simplicity of this shot, the contrasting textures of steel and water, and the impressionist reflections of the ferry.
