3 white Candles? Last year, on 2008-2-3 I shot this Chapel on a Hill on a sunny afternoon but this year, I shot the same chapel on a rainy day. I entered into the driveway, found the gate closed but there was a name - Mount Susanna Chapel. I wonder why this name? It was said that a man stopped here one day facing some problems and received some help. Later he became very rich and donated to build this chapel as a way to show his appreciation to God's help. Around Kuching division, most villagers are Christian Bidayuhs while in Sri Aman division, they are Christian Dayaks. That is why, you will very often see Christian names for Bidayuh or Dayak friends and families.

I am not very happy with this shot; hoping next time to have better light, no rain so that I can afford a tripod to setup. Honestly speaking, 1.4years later on TE, I am wondering how I can move forward by further improve photography. Any ideas? FL270mm, ISO800

Hi Bill,
Wonderful capture of this lovely little chapel. It resembles me of my series of Icelandic chapels, the structure is very similar. :) Anyway, interesting shapes, good POV and well presented architectural beauty. Good job, my friend! TFS:

Hello Bill
Excelent sharp image with a fantastic light and colours, and a very well done composition with the low POV emphasising the majestic of the church.
Best regards, mb

It's a nice view Bill, with the steps leading up from the left and the apparent compression at 270mm is good.. The building itself is a tad OE but I can see that the contrasts of light are pretty intense..

Moving forward?? Try new things - hi speed or lo speed photography, fisheye lenses, portraiture etc etc.. Most of your stuff is landscape, scenery so have a change and enjoy experimenting!!

Hi Bill,
Unique building indeed. The white stands out well against the b/g. Perhaps the b/g could've been lightened just a touch. Nice touch to included the steps leading up to it.

Hi Bill, interesting shot for the particular architecture of this chapel. Ciao, Adele

Striking chapel, interesting design and architecture. Well placed in the frame with perfect use of the steps leading up to it as lead-in.

I actually think this is a well-taken shot, you could have afforded a quicker shutter speed but otherwise - perfect!

very interesting and beautiful architecture.I liked colours.Well composed,well presented.TFS.Necla.

Hi Bill,

No better way in placing this shuttle (as Agoes puts it)in the frame. I like the way you have drawn the path at the bottom of the left corner of the frame. Excellent depth against the thick foliage in the backdrop.

TFS and have a nice day.

Hi Bill

Very unusual to see a church in Malaysia. I'm more use to seeing Mosques. Perhaps I would burn in the strong highlights here. The path adds superb lead in lines. Tfs!

Did they use a spaceshuttle to build this church? It's modern and creative - but I'm not sure if I would like to visit it - sooooo many stairs to walk up!!! Puuuuhhhh!
I wonder that there are so many Christians there around Kuching. Thanks for your pretty and also interesting post, bye and greetings
Sabine - wishnugaruda

I was thinking they were either, Candles, crayons or the SPACE SHUTTLE! HAHA! Nice work on this, very different from any church I have ever seen Bill! I was reading your note. Maybe the "photography" is fine, what about learning new ways to do pp work! I find that I have had the most fun learning HDR, Layers, Conversions to sepia and BW, high key, pictures with noise and making the noise work for you! There is all sorts of fun things out there!
B-)

Ciao Bill, splendid view of lovely white chapel, great POV on strange but beautiful architecture, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Bill,
Beautiful shot of a mystic place...
Good details and clarity.tfs.
Dr.Seyfettin Güner

Hello Bill,

Being quite a novice myself, I feel I cannot hold myself up as an oracle to advise you on how to improve your photography.
I do feel, however that improvement in composition, pov, cropping, etc. comes with experience. Initially, shots were safe; capture the whole person, animal, building, flower. With experience you find that a facial portion, a detailed window or a flower centre, details all that you want to say. This, of course doesn't happen all the time ... it wouild become boring ... but the confidence and experience that you gain allows you to make that choice.

You certainly do these things.
(Sometimes we are our own hardest judges!)

You have chosen a good pov with reference to the pathway and positioned it beautifully from the l/h corner.
The facade is simplicity personified with just the cross standing proud and dramatic. Maybe you are dissatisfied because of lack of texture and details. If you wanted those features to be important, I would suggest a change of aspect and capture the building from a more angled view where there appears to be more interesting shapes and colour.

Sorry for the long critique.
Have a good day,
Bev :-)

Ciao Bill

I like the upward point of view,
resulting in strong and dynamic lines!
Delicate visual of the chapel on the hillside,
The fine lihghting adds to the atmosphere,
sharp details in the architecture ...
From very good taste my friend ...

Hi Bill

Really exotic. Athe top amidst the green forest and that beautiful straight line all the way to it. Very well balanced and the contrast of the white on the green is really attractive.

Have a good evening and TFS

Dear Bill, hope you are having good time. Here in the picture I really liked the surroundings. So lush green! The sharpness of the shot is definately very good and yes I do agree with fellow mates, it does looks like space shuttle!!
All the best with the experimentation and enjoy the weekend!

Bom dia Bill

Hi Bill,
Great POV here for this shot. I love the white candle shaped chapel set against those green trees. I like how you managed to have the stairs coming up from the bottom left of the frame. Very nice work Bill.

I love how you'd carefully place the steps to a corner of the frame and the rest also on a nearly perfect ROT lines.

I am not sure on how/what to suggest to move further in improving photography, especially for you, Bill - I strongly believe that you know a lot better than me. But, if I talk to myself, I guess I need to have the courage to step forward to the commercial societies, where challenges are tough, sometimes 'rigid'. I don't know if this is helping me, but I found that I am pushing myself to do something different, at the same time digging something better day after day. I wish I could. I wish I will.

Hi Bill,

The diagonal line of the steps going to the chapel is an asset to the composition. The trees are a natural frame to the building. The point of view is allowing us to see with precision the details and colors of the architecture of the chapel. The light is enhancing the colors of the scenery. Have a nice day.

Pierre
